Job Description
The Senior Manager, Materials and Process Engineering, leads multiple engineering teams supporting the selection, validation, and development of materials and processing techniques for fusion reactor components, ensuring their performance under extreme conditions to enable fusion power deployment.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a team of engineering discipline groups including metals, alloys, welding, composites, coatings, and ceramics.
- Serve as a centralized resource across engineering design teams and development projects.
- Maintain and develop standard engineering practices, including materials process specifications and design materials allowables.
Requirements
- Experience managing a functional group of multiple engineering discipline teams including metals and alloys, welding and joining, composites and polymers, coatings and special processes, and ceramics.
- Ability to maintain and mature standard engineering practices in Materials and Process Engineering, including the generation of materials process specifications, the definition of design materials allowables, and the maintenance of materials libraries.
- Proven leadership skills in managing engineering teams serving as a centralized matrix resource across engineering design teams and development projects.
- Strong understanding of materials selection, validation, and measurement of materials properties relevant to fusion energy applications.
- Experience in conducting research and development to develop new materials and processes for fusion power deployment.
- Knowledge of materials challenges posed by fusion devices, including neutron fluxes produced by deuterium-tritium fusion, high heat loads, molten salt coolant systems, complex component topologies, high magnetic fields, and high mechanical loading in cryogenic conditions.
- Ability to define and implement engineering standards and practices within the Materials and Process department.
- Experience in defining design materials allowables and generating materials process specifications.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment driven by values of integrity, execution, impact, and self-critique.
- Compliance with U.S. laws concerning the export of controlled or protected technologies or information, including Export Control Laws.
