Job Description

The Scientist - Scenarios and Integrated Modeling will develop and improve plasma physics simulation tools, analyze experimental data, and contribute to the planning and optimization of fusion plasma operations for the SPARC and ARC fusion projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop plasma physics scenarios for SPARC and ARC based on integrated simulation and modeling of core and edge plasma.
  • Coordinate with a multi-institutional team to develop and improve an integrated modeling toolset.
  • Employ the modeling toolset for experimental planning and analysis on SPARC.
  • Contribute to the development and testing of a comprehensive predictive plasma scenario toolchain.
  • Plan and execute experiments on SPARC to validate physics understanding and optimize plasma performance.
  • Define plasma operation goals and identify optimal operation scenarios for each goal.
  • Participate in the execution and analysis of SPARC operations to inform future power plant development.

Requirements

  • Develop plasma physics scenarios for SPARC and ARC based on comprehensive integrated simulation and modeling of the core and edge plasma.
  • Coordinate with a multi-institutional team of plasma physics experts to develop and improve an integrated modeling toolset.
  • Employ the integrated modeling toolset for experimental planning and analysis on SPARC.
  • Contribute to the development and testing of a comprehensive predictive toolchain that includes all physics capabilities needed to evaluate plasma scenario performance and robustness.
  • Participate in planning and executing experiments on SPARC using the developed toolchain.
  • Participate in the development and optimization of future power plants, including ARC.
  • Define plasma operation goals and identify optimal operation scenarios for each goal.
  • Participate directly in the execution and analysis of SPARC operations.
  • Possess a strong background in plasma physics, fusion energy, or a related field.
  • Have experience with integrated simulation and modeling of plasma physics or similar complex systems.
  • Possess the ability to coordinate and collaborate with multi-institutional teams of experts.
  • Be able to develop, improve, and test complex modeling toolsets and simulation frameworks.
  • Have a commitment to advancing fusion energy research and development.
  • Compliance with U.S. laws concerning the export of controlled or protected technologies or information (Export Control Laws) is required, and any employment offer is contingent upon compliance.
