Job Description

The Lead, Mechanical Engineering - Assembly Equipment is a hands-on leadership role responsible for designing, fabricating, and testing specialized assembly equipment and tooling for fusion reactor components, guiding a team through all development stages from concept to commissioning, with a focus on high-precision hardware for tokamak assembly.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, fabricate, and optimize specialized assembly equipment and tooling for tokamak assembly.
  • Translate creative and technical visions into actionable engineering designs.
  • Lead and manage the development of high load and high-precision hardware from conception through commissioning and testing.
  • Ensure the team delivers robust mechanical solutions to meet project challenges.
  • Oversee requirements-based design ideation, procurement, and workflow improvements.
  • Guide and collaborate on projects such as large frames for magnets and remote maintenance equipment post-SPARC completion.

Requirements

  • Experience leading mechanical engineering teams responsible for the design, fabrication, and performance of specialized assembly equipment and tooling.
  • Proven ability to translate creative and technical visions into actionable engineering designs for high load and high-precision hardware used in tokamak assembly.
  • Demonstrated experience managing all steps of engineering projects from requirements-based design ideation through commissioning and testing.
  • Ability to develop quick designs for simple fixturing as well as multi-month peer-reviewed critical lifting structures.
  • Experience in requirements-based design, procurement efforts, and workflow definition related to mechanical hardware development.
  • Hands-on leadership skills to cascade creative visions, establish technical excellence, and ensure delivery of robust mechanical solutions.
  • Experience working on equipment required for fusion reactor assembly, specifically related to projects like SPARC and ARC magnets or remote maintenance equipment, is preferred.
  • Ability to manage and guide projects involving the creation of equipment for fusion power plant assembly, including massive frames and specialized tooling.
  • Compliance with U.S. export control laws concerning the export of controlled or protected technologies or information.
  • Willingness to work onsite at Commonwealth Fusion Systems facilities.
