Job Description

The Director of Instrumentation and Controls is responsible for leading the engineering team in designing and implementing instrumentation and control systems to operate the SPARC fusion device and future power plants, ensuring reliable and efficient operation of complex fusion technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage engineering staff responsible for designing instrumentation and control systems for SPARC and future power plants
  • Design and implement instrumentation systems required for the operation of SPARC
  • Develop control systems to ensure the safe and efficient operation of fusion reactor components

Requirements

  • Experience managing engineering staff responsible for designing and implementing instrumentation and control systems for complex projects, such as fusion power plants or similar large-scale scientific/engineering systems.
  • Proven ability to design and implement instrumentation and control systems required to operate advanced fusion devices like SPARC or similar tokamak systems.
  • Strong understanding of instrumentation and control system requirements in environments with large operational loads, including thermal and electromagnetic loads.
  • Experience working with or knowledge of systems involving high-temperature superconductors (HTS), copper magnets, thermal shields, vessels, and plasma-facing components.
  • Ability to manage projects that involve competing spatial and operational constraints within complex engineering environments.
  • Compliance with U.S. laws concerning the export of controlled or protected technologies or information (Export Control Laws), including any necessary adherence to export regulations during employment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related technical field (implied by managing engineering staff in technical systems).
