The Substation O M Field Engineer oversees the operation, maintenance, and repair of high voltage electrical equipment at utility substations for wind and solar power plants, providing technical support, troubleshooting, and supervision to ensure safety, compliance, and reliable energy generation.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee operation, maintenance, and repair of utility substation HV electrical equipment for wind and solar power plants
Provide technical support, troubleshooting, and electrical testing for high voltage substations
Develop and implement procedures for substation lock-out, tag-out, HV switching, and safety grounding
Train and assist site personnel in understanding and troubleshooting substation equipment and protections
Review and assist in planning substation outage work scopes and supervise during major maintenance outages
Ensure equipment modifications are documented and maintain test logs and site-specific manuals
Evaluate electrical fault reports and verify protective relay performance
Support compliance with NERC standards and regulations related to substation operations
Requirements
Possess experience in troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of high voltage equipment in electric power-generating plants, transmission facilities, or similar industrial settings.
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology focused on electrical power systems, OR a minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience directly with electric substation high voltage equipment.
A high school diploma or GED is required.
Completion of a formal apprenticeship program OR an equivalent combination of work experience AND technical training will be considered.
Must possess a working knowledge of medium voltage (MV) and high voltage (HV) electrical equipment, overhead lines, underground lines, and substation systems.
Must possess an understanding of electrical work safety, environmental and safety rules, and regulations, and first aid procedures.
Must possess knowledge of electrical high voltage test equipment for testing electrical insulation resistance.
Must possess significant experience reading and interpreting electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
Must be able to query SEL protective relays to identify and troubleshoot the cause of relay trips.
Must have the ability to lead technical training of plant maintenance personnel.
Must possess a valid driver’s license; Class B license is required, Class A is preferred.
Must be able to work flexible work hours.
Must support the NERC Compliance program, with specific regard to PER-006, PRC-004, PRC-005, and PRC-025.
Must be willing to travel within the associated region to supervise and assist with substation maintenance activities, approximately 50% of the time; airline travel may be required for some locations.
