The Lead Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing wind turbines and associated equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and high-availability operations at the wind site, while supervising and mentoring other personnel and supporting site operations.
Key Responsibilities
Monitor and enforce safe work practices at the wind site
Inspect completed repairs and scheduled maintenance for quality assurance
Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical problems on wind turbines
Perform maintenance, repair, and replacement of turbine components according to standards
Support site operations and lead crews as directed by the Site Manager
Train and mentor lower-level personnel in turbine maintenance and safety procedures
Document work performed, parts used, and time spent using service reporting systems
Update manuals, work instructions, and technical data for wind turbines
Read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams, mentoring others as needed
Monitor site conditions, contractors, and personnel to maximize revenue and minimize downtime
Maintain tools and equipment in good working order
Perform lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures safely and mentor others in LOTO
Conduct balance of plant, O&M facility, and switchyard maintenance, repairs, and inspections
Ensure proper maintenance and servicing of vehicles and equipment
Requirements
High school diploma or GED is required
Associates degree in electrical or technical field and 2 years of wind turbine experience, or 5 years of wind turbine experience required
1 year of independent turbine troubleshooting experience, and ability to troubleshoot turbines without assistance required
Able to climb towers unassisted up to 300 feet
Must possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record
Able to work with electrical wires and differentiate between color wires
Able to safely work in a wide range of adverse climates and environments
Able to travel as required
Demonstrated ability to maintain wind turbines at a high availability factor
Proficiency in MS Office, including creating, editing, and modifying Word and Excel documents
Possess in-depth understanding of wind turbine components including the pitch system, computerized control system, and the power conversion unit
Knowledge and understanding of OEM approved mechanical maintenance methods and practices
Skills to perform mechanical and electrical equipment repairs and guide and mentor others to do the same
