Job Description

This position involves leading the design and oversight of HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems for large-scale buildings, providing technical leadership to a multidisciplinary team, and managing project execution from schematic design to construction administration within a collaborative engineering environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and oversee HVAC systems, including ductwork, piping, and equipment selection for large-scale buildings
  • Assist with Plumbing and Fire Protection system designs as needed
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and supervision to design team members
  • Conduct quality assurance and independent review of engineering work
  • Develop project schedules, work plans, and manage deliverables in collaboration with the Project Manager
  • Create Revit BIM models of construction drawings for HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems
  • Specify mechanical equipment such as boilers, chillers, and air handling units
  • Review and approve shop drawings for compliance with specifications and contract documents
  • Participate in client meetings, construction meetings, and site visits to verify conditions and observe progress
  • Lead or participate in value engineering sessions to improve project design and efficiency

Requirements

  • Perform and direct complex design of ductwork, piping, and equipment selection for HVAC systems for large scale size buildings.
  • Able to work independently in all Mechanical disciplines with no oversight or guidance.
  • Assist with Plumbing and Fire Protection Designs as necessary.
  • Oversee, guide, mentor, and provide technical leadership to designers and engineering team.
  • Direct the work of less experienced staff including the development and presentation of annual performance reviews.
  • Serve in the QAQC process and act as an independent reviewer.
  • Work with Project Manager to establish and maintain realistic work, labor plans, and deliverable schedules that contribute to the project’s bottom line financial success and satisfy contractual obligations.
  • Interface effectively with clients and members of the design team.
  • Oversee the use of engineering complexities related to the use of Energy Model software.
  • Prepare Revit BIM modeling of construction drawings of HVAC systems from schematic design to construction administration phases, including layout, sketches, and detail drawings as required.
  • Perform Revit BIM modeling for plumbing and fire protection systems as necessary.
  • Specify mechanical equipment such as boilers, chillers, and air handling units.
  • Review and accept selective shop drawings for compliance with specifications and contract documents.
  • Attend Owner, Architect, Construction Administration (OAC) meetings with an understanding and focus on the project budget.
  • Participate or lead value engineering sessions with Architectural Engineering team.
  • Respond to RFIs and review change orders in the preparation of construction documents.
  • Conduct job site visits to verify existing conditions and observe construction progress, including physical site walk-throughs.
  • Attend and participate in construction meetings.
  • Represent the company in project activities and direct activities of project team members.
  • Perform project billable work at 80% of time.
  • Possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, with a preference for degrees from an ABET accredited program.
  • Have a minimum of 10 years of related experience.
  • Hold or be eligible for a Professional Engineer (PE) license in the United States (preferred).
  • Possess LEED accreditation (preferred).
  • Have strong knowledge of Life Safety Codes.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Be a critical thinker and highly analytical.
  • Have the ability to engage effectively with clients.
  • Be a fully qualified professional able to perform work with a high degree of latitude, including some ambiguity.
  • Have experience with computer applications for engineering design programs such as Revit, Trane Trace, or Trane 3D Plus.
  • Complete mandatory training, including compliance training, within required timeframes and adhere to internal policies and the Code of Conduct.
