Job Description

The Staff Hardware Reliability Engineer will lead efforts to ensure the robustness and reliability of Aurora's autonomous vehicle sensor systems, including lidar, camera, radar, and IMU, through testing, failure analysis, risk mitigation, and collaboration across engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead reliability assessments and design test campaigns for sensor systems (Lidar, Camera, Radar, IMU).
  • Conduct failure analysis and implement corrective actions for reliability failures.
  • Facilitate design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (DFMEA) sessions and develop corrective action plans.
  • Create predictive reliability models to estimate failure rates across various conditions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate reliability findings into design and manufacturing processes.

Requirements

  • Proven track record in developing and validating optomechanical products, including cameras, lidars, or other optical instruments.
  • Deep understanding of the physics of failure for electronic and optoelectronic components as applied to sensor systems.
  • Strong ability to design and execute reliability test flows such as shock, vibration, and thermal testing suitable for contract manufacturing environments.
  • Proficiency in analyzing sensor performance data to generate actionable insights.
  • Direct experience improving the reliability of mass-produced optomechanical assemblies and managing feedback loops with external vendors.
  • Extensive experience in sensor validation.
  • Familiarity with automotive reliability standards such as AEC-Q, ISO-16750, or other relevant standards.
  • Experience evaluating the reliability of manufacturing and assembly processes as a product moves toward large-scale production.
  • Ownership of complex reliability failures and shepherding corrective actions in the form of near-term mitigations and longer-term design or process fixes.
  • Ability to lead reliability assessments, including conducting rigorous evaluations and designing test campaigns for internal and external sensor designs to meet automotive standards.
  • Experience in developing predictive reliability models to predict failure rates for integrated modules and individual sensors across diverse climates and road conditions.
  • Experience collaborating cross-functionally with hardware design, systems engineering, hardware safety, field operations, embedded software, and contract manufacturers to integrate reliability findings into design and manufacturing processes.
  • Working knowledge of the interactions between hardware and firmware critical to sensor performance.
  • Conceptual understanding of material science, PCBAs, BGA structural integrity, and conformal coating impacts on humidity exposure.

Benefits & Perks

Base salary range: $181,000 - $262,000 per year
