Job Description
The Director of Embedded Software at Alarm.com is responsible for leading multiple engineering teams to develop, execute, and oversee the company's embedded software strategy, architecture, and development processes across various device products, ensuring technical excellence, scalability, and collaboration with external partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage multiple embedded software engineering teams and managers to ensure software delivery across the device portfolio
- Define and execute the long-term embedded software strategy, architecture, and technology roadmap aligned with company objectives
- Collaborate with executive leadership, product management, and engineering teams to drive strategic initiatives and business outcomes
- Manage project leads working with third-party hardware companies to develop and integrate embedded software solutions
- Oversee collaborative embedded software development efforts with external partners
- Drive technical excellence through standardization, best practices, and scalable development processes
- Build, recruit, and develop high-performing engineering talent and succession plans
- Oversee budget planning, resource allocation, and project prioritization for embedded software initiatives
- Champion innovation and emerging technologies to maintain competitive advantage in embedded software
Requirements
- B.S. in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
- Strong technical background with knowledge of C, C++, embedded systems architecture, and modern development practices
- 10 years of experience in Embedded Systems development with increasing leadership responsibility
- Experience with Embedded Operating Systems like Buildroot, Yocto Project, Android, and embedded Linux distributions
- 5 years of experience leading engineering teams, including experience managing managers or multiple teams
- Proven track record of building, scaling, and leading diverse technical organizations across multiple product lines
- Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, resource allocation, and cross-functional collaboration at senior leadership level
- Strong business acumen with ability to align technical decisions with company strategy and market requirements
