Job Description

A Legal Associate role supporting Acumen's social enterprise programs in Nigeria, focusing on legal compliance, contract review, deal documentation, and project management within a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal support and advice for programme activities, ensuring compliance with Canadian and Nigerian laws.
  • Coordinate and manage legal compliance, including filings, registrations, and policy development.
  • Review and draft contracts related to charitable and commercial activities, including investments and partnerships.
  • Support deal documentation processes for early-stage investments, including due diligence and regulatory filings.
  • Assist in developing and implementing legal processes, templates, and tools to improve programme efficiency.
  • Collaborate with legal teams on risk management, legal liabilities, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support project management efforts by developing milestones, tracking progress, and ensuring timely execution.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years experience practicing transactional law and supporting legal projects across various stakeholders.
  • Fluency in English required.
  • Experience supporting legal projects across various stakeholders.
  • Ability to assess potential legal liabilities associated with various business activities and support the implementation of risk management protocols.
  • Ability to work proactively and under pressure, support projects to completion, and stay organized while managing multiple workstreams simultaneously.
  • Good project management and stakeholder management skills.
  • Familiarity with legal issues specific to Nigeria, including maintaining the legal status of local entities, coordinating governmental filings and registrations, and understanding Nigerian laws.
  • Permanently authorized to work in Nigeria, with a license to practice law.
  • Strong organizational and diplomacy skills, including excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to accuracy, attention to detail, and follow-through.
  • Ability to work efficiently with different time zones.
  • Experience with contract drafting and review, including general contract, intellectual property, data privacy, employment, governance, and formation matters.
  • Familiarity with legal issues related to venture capital investing is a plus, as is in-house experience.
  • Experience with non-profit and/or investment regulations and compliance is a plus.
