Job Description
The Learning Design Manager will develop and enhance capacity-building programs for African social entrepreneurs, focusing on curriculum design, program development, and stakeholder collaboration to support early-stage social enterprises across Africa.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop curricula and learning experiences for social entrepreneurs in Africa.
- Create user personas, define learning outcomes, and tailor programs based on user research and contextual understanding.
- Sequence learning activities, mentoring, funding, and milestones to maximize engagement and impact.
- Ensure programs align with learning design principles, mission, and target audience needs.
- Collaborate with impact teams to define and track metrics on engagement, learning outcomes, and long-term impact.
- Adapt existing content and create new materials, including e-learning modules, workshops, and practical tools.
- Identify and coordinate with subject matter experts and third-party providers to support program delivery.
- Support program teams with troubleshooting and continuous improvement of the learner journey.
Requirements
- A minimum of 8 years of professional experience, including at least 3 years of designing or delivering programs for African social entrepreneurs.
- Experience with learning design, pedagogy, curriculum development, content production, and facilitation.
- Experience setting up large-scale mentoring programs.
- Experience in co-creating with third-party delivery partners, subject matter experts, and consultants.
- Detail-oriented project management skills.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- Critical thinking skills and the ability to work, problem-solve, and collaborate thoughtfully with colleagues and personalities at all levels both externally and internally, across various functions and geographies.
- Experience working in East Africa and other regions in Africa (preferred).
- Ability to create user personas, define learning outcomes, and draw upon user research to shape programs, learning materials, and content.
- Ability to understand learners' business models, stage of growth, market contexts, and key barriers to scale, and tailor program design accordingly.
- Ability to design program arcs including sequencing learning, mentoring, funding, milestones, and events to maximize engagement and progression.
- Ability to design programs that translate learning into tangible business, social, and systemic outcomes such as job creation, resilient business models, investment readiness, and expanded impact.
- Ability to ensure a cohesive learning experience that aligns content, delivery, and engagement methods with target groups' needs, contexts, and learning styles.
- Ability to ground all programs and learning experiences in Acumen Academy’s learning design principles and values, aligning content and delivery with the mission to develop moral and effective leaders who drive systemic change.
- Experience collaborating with impact teams to define and track metrics measuring engagement, learning outcomes, behavioral shifts, and long-term impact.
- Experience integrating feedback loops and data collection processes to refine and improve programs.
- Ability to create experiences that develop social capital through interactions among participants, mentors, experts, and investors.
- Experience adapting existing content and curricula to align with cultural, professional, and geographic contexts of target groups, and designing new materials such as modular e-learning content, workshops, practical assignments, immersive experiences, and mentoring tools.
- Ability to identify and support the management of subject matter experts and third-party business development support providers.
- Ability to support program delivery teams with learner troubleshooting and identifying areas for improvement in the learner journey.
- Ability to work collaboratively across internal functions, including with marketing teams, to ensure brand compliance of new content.
- Location requirement: Must be based in Nairobi, Kenya, with an expectation of working from the office 3 days a week; remote work from other geographies is not an option.
