Job Description
HRL Laboratories is seeking a Quantum Device Theorist to develop theoretical models and numerical simulations for semiconductor-based quantum devices, particularly quantum-dot spin qubits. The role involves collaboration with a team of scientists and engineers to contribute to device design, fabrication, and experimental analysis.
Responsibilities
- •Develop microscopic models of condensed matter phenomena relevant to spin qubit operation.
- •Apply results to design devices and explain experiments.
- •Develop and use numerical simulation tools to model electronic structure and quantum transport.
- •Present results in technical presentations.
- •Collaborate with colleagues in a team environment.
- •Contribute to research reviews, proposals, and technical report writing.
Requirements
- •Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or related fields.
- •Expertise in fundamental theory and computational modeling of the electronic, optical, thermal, and/or magnetic properties of solid-state materials and devices, particularly semiconductors and superconductors.
- •Proficiency in C and Python with experience developing computational codes for scientific or engineering applications.
- •Knowledge of numerical analysis and scientific computing techniques.
- •Understanding of solid-state materials fabrication and characterization techniques, such as epitaxial growth, lithography, electrical characterization, optical spectroscopy, and/or microscopy.
- •Direct experience working in close collaboration with experimental materials and device development groups.
- •Ability to spend extended periods of time at a computer monitor.
- •Excellent problem-solving skills and written and verbal communication skills.
- •Ability and willingness to travel.
- •U.S. citizenship is required.
- •Active security clearance or ability to apply for security clearance.
