Job Description

The Surface Prep Technician prepares turbine engine components for thermal spray operations by applying masking and conducting surface preparations using blasting techniques. This role involves following established procedures and requires hands-on training to ensure quality and efficiency in the restoration process.

Responsibilities

  • Mask components to protect surfaces from subsequent operations.
  • Apply tape by hand on areas to be masked.
  • Apply hard masking such as caps and shields following documented work instructions.
  • Trim masking using knives or other sharp tools to precise dimensions.
  • Inspect work for completion and quality.
  • Follow written work instructions accurately including work and shop drawings.
  • Use overhead cranes to position parts.
  • Organize components staged in the department to support an efficient schedule.

Requirements

  • 6 months to 1 year of experience with various types of masking, such as paint, blasting, autobody, plating, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and follow work instructions and accurately document processes and findings.
  • Some previous exposure to the use of measuring gages, such as micrometers and calipers, and understanding of basic shop math.
  • Experience with the use of overhead cranes.
  • High school or technical school graduate or equivalent.
  • Read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Must be able to use hand tools and have good hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to work independently and perform the job with minimum supervision.
  • Must be able to move parts weighing up to 50 pounds using hoists, slings, carts, or other handling methods.
  • This position has pre-employment testing requirements that may require fitness for duty testing and a vision exam.
  • Follow all safety and environmental rules that apply.
  • Use of safety and personal protective equipment is mandatory under some conditions.
