How to become a lineman
- Most linemen reach journeyman status through a three to four year apprenticeship run by a utility or a joint union and contractor program.
- Pre-apprenticeship lineworker schools teach climbing and safety basics, and many apprenticeships prefer applicants who have completed one.
- A commercial driver's license (usually Class A) is commonly required, along with the ability to climb and work at height in all weather.
- Storm restoration work can mean travel and long shifts; postings state whether a role includes it.
