Job Description

The Controls Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and supporting electrical and data acquisition systems for test facilities, ensuring reliable operation, data integrity, and process optimization through system configuration, analysis, and troubleshooting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and support electrical and instrumentation systems for test facility infrastructure.
  • Develop and maintain Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and ISA-compliant data sheets for field instrumentation.
  • Configure, operate, and maintain data acquisition systems and data historian systems (e.g., Aveva PI System).
  • Perform data analysis to identify trends, anomalies, and opportunities for process improvement.
  • Inspect and test electrical and instrumentation equipment prior to operation.
  • Review shop drawings and submittals for compliance with electrical and data system specifications.
  • Coordinate and implement HAZOP recommendations into electrical and control system designs.
  • Participate in facility commissioning, including validation of data acquisition and historian systems.
  • Configure real-time dashboards, user interfaces, reports, and manage data points within data acquisition and HMI systems.
  • Modify PLC programs and integrate additional IO points into HMI and data systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; Chemical or Mechanical Engineering may be considered with substantial relevant on-the-job experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a controls-focused role, with demonstrated experience in the design and operation of industrial facilities, specifically in data acquisition systems and data historians.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Aveva software suite, including PI System, System Platform, and Historian.
  • Experience in designing, configuring, and maintaining data acquisition systems for test equipment and facility operations.
  • Experience in implementing and managing data historian systems, preferably with Aveva PI System or similar, to ensure secure and reliable data storage.
  • Experience in performing data analysis to identify trends, anomalies, and opportunities for process improvement within test facilities.
  • Experience in inspection and testing of electrical and instrumentation equipment, including data acquisition components, prior to operation.
  • Ability to review and determine the suitability of shop drawings and submittals, ensuring adherence to electrical and data system specifications.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Ability to coordinate, document, and implement HAZOP recommendations into facility electrical and control system designs.
  • Experience actively participating in facility commissioning efforts, including validation of data acquisition and historian systems.
  • Experience configuring real-time dashboards, user interfaces, and reports using data acquisition systems and PLC networks.
  • Experience adding, removing, or modifying data points from different systems into the data acquisition system.
  • Ability to configure and manage a plant-wide human machine interface (HMI) system, with Factory Talk SE experience preferred.
  • Ability to modify existing PLC programs for additional IO points and incorporate these points into HMI and Data Acquisition systems.
  • Ability to travel to customer offices and facilities as required for design development, technical reviews, troubleshooting, etc.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts related to electrical and data systems.
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively with individuals across all departments.
  • Ability to work in environments with varying temperatures and noise levels.
  • Proven ability to manage workload effectively and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
