Job Description

The Wastewater Operator is responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, and monitoring of a wastewater treatment facility, ensuring compliance with regulations, performing laboratory analyses, and responding to emergency situations to protect water resources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor the wastewater treatment facility and collection system daily
  • Perform laboratory analysis and maintain accurate records of process data
  • Conduct daily rounds and oversee process control to ensure compliance
  • Perform general maintenance of equipment and facility grounds
  • Manage sludge thickening processes
  • Respond to emergency situations and work in inclement weather as needed
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for plant coverage outside normal hours

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid wastewater operator certification or license as required by the state of Massachusetts.
  • Experience operating a wastewater treatment facility, specifically involving membrane bioreactor (MBR) systems, at a scale of at least 0.45 million gallons per day (MGD).
  • Ability to perform daily rounds, laboratory analysis, record keeping, process control, sludge thickening, maintenance projects, and general facility and grounds maintenance in a safe and professional manner by following established safety, operating, and emergency response procedures.
  • Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation for plant coverage outside normal workday hours, including weekends, and respond to emergency situations as needed.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including inclement weather, and work in a physically demanding environment as required for plant operations and maintenance.
  • Work schedule of Monday through Friday, from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with shifts including weekends and outside normal hours as part of the on-call rotation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and compliance with all safety, operating, and emergency response procedures.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively with colleagues and regulatory agencies.
  • Willingness and ability to assist in earning, upgrading, and maintaining industry certifications related to wastewater treatment operations.
