Job Description

The Robotics Intern will work on developing and improving physically-accurate simulation tools for robotics, collaborating with research scientists and engineers to solve modeling and software challenges, with the goal of advancing robotic capabilities and contributing to open-source projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop physically-accurate, reliable, and fast models and algorithms for robotics simulation.
  • Collaborate with software engineers and research scientists to enhance simulation tools.
  • Solve modeling, mathematical, and implementation problems related to robot dynamics and perception.
  • Translate physical and mathematical phenomena into software models.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of new capabilities in open source robotics software (Drake).
  • Validate simulation accuracy and verify software and numerical methods.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a university or college program related to robotics, computer science, engineering, or a similar field, with a focus on developing physically-accurate, reliable, and fast models and algorithms for simulation and robotics.
  • Experience working collaboratively with software engineers and research scientists to develop models and algorithms relevant to the simulation and robotics community.
  • Ability to work on solving difficult modeling, mathematical, and implementation problems with a focus on accuracy of simulation results, and reliability and performance of software.
  • Proficiency in distilling physical and mathematical phenomena into software models that are clear and functional.
  • Experience with developing or working with open source robotics software, preferably in C or modern C++.
  • Knowledge of multibody dynamics, rigid and soft body computational mechanics, and numerical methods such as numerical integration of DAEs, time stepping, and event handling.
  • Familiarity with physics-based, high-fidelity, high-performance software tools for simulation of robots and vehicles interacting with their environments.
  • Understanding of computational geometry, rendering, and contact response emphasizing manipulation.
  • Experience with validation of simulation accuracy and verification of software and numerical methods.
  • Ability to contribute to scientific publications and implement new capabilities in open source software such as Drake.
  • Availability to participate in a 12-week summer internship during the year 2026, with a hybrid in-office work arrangement.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States (implied by the context of the internship and legal notices).
