Job Description
A Research Engineer at Toyota Research Institute will develop and maintain large-scale data and model infrastructure to support research in embodied AI, working closely with scientists to prototype, experiment, and deploy advanced multi-modal foundation models for robotics and autonomous systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and maintain infrastructure for ingesting, unifying, and serving heterogeneous multi-modal datasets at scale.
- Support and optimize large-scale distributed training of diffusion and transformer models.
- Develop tools and pipelines to accelerate the research-to-results cycle.
- Work closely with researchers to prototype new ideas and run experiments.
- Assist in shipping models toward real-world applications.
Requirements
- Experience in building and maintaining infrastructure that ingests, unifies, and serves heterogeneous multi-modal datasets at scale supporting large-scale distributed training of diffusion and transformer models.
- Ability to develop tools and pipelines that accelerate the research-to-results cycle.
- Experience working directly alongside research scientists to prototype new ideas, run experiments, and help ship models toward real-world applications.
- Understanding of research deeply enough to make independent technical decisions related to data and model infrastructure.
- Proficiency in supporting and optimizing large-scale distributed training of machine learning models, specifically diffusion and transformer models.
- Experience in building and maintaining production-grade systems that support large-scale data processing and model training.
- Ability to understand and work with multi-modal data including RGB, depth, flow, semantics, actions, tactile, and audio data from multiple domains such as driving, robotics, indoors, outdoors, etc.
- Strong engineering skills to bridge the gap between research ideas and scalable, reliable systems.
- Educational background or experience relevant to AI, robotics, machine learning, or related fields (implied by the need to understand research deeply and make technical decisions).
