Job Description
A Process Safety Engineer at Solid Power is responsible for ensuring the safety and regulatory compliance of powder production processes, developing safety programs, conducting hazard analyses, and implementing safety improvements in a fast-paced battery manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure process safety management and health and safety regulatory compliance for powder production processes
- Develop, update, and implement safety programs, procedures, and standards, including PSM and EHS management systems
- Conduct and lead process hazard analyses (e.g., WhatIf, HazOp, HazID, FMEA) to identify and mitigate safety risks
- Review and develop safety procedures such as Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and P&IDs
- Perform site safety inspections, risk assessments, and audits to identify potential safety issues
- Lead incident investigations and develop corrective actions to prevent recurrence
- Provide safety training and develop emergency response and evacuation plans
- Collaborate with operations to address and mitigate safety concerns in powder manufacturing
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in safety engineering, chemical engineering, Industrial Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, or a related field.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in safety engineering or a related field.
- Experience in powder handling process or chemical manufacturing is desired.
- In-depth knowledge of OSHA regulations, safety management systems, international fire code, electrical area classification, combustible dust management, and EPA requirements and industry-specific safety standards.
- Having in-depth working knowledge of regulations including OSHA 1910 including Subpart H, Subpart N, Subpart O and EPA 40 CFR 68.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in using safety management software and tools.
- Hands-on experience, with demonstrated knowledge of industrial processes and the associated safety concerns.
- Experience performing safety analyses including Hazard Analysis, FMEA, Fault Tree Analysis, and Human Error Assessments.
- Solid and hazardous waste management for a large quantity generator.
- Air emission management, permitting, and controls experience is a plus.
- ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 implementation, certification, and maintenance preferred.
- Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and strengthen a culture of inclusion.
- Interpersonal skills in developing positive working relations with other employees.
- Willingness to initiate and execute multiple tasks in a fast-paced start-up environment.
- Physical ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as necessary including eye protection, hair net, gloves, face mask, coveralls, full-face respirator or PAPR.
- Ability to work safely in a potentially hazardous environment.
