Job Description
A Staff Scientist role focused on developing and validating analytical methods for battery materials, involving instrument selection, process optimization, and cross-functional collaboration to support research and quality control at a next-generation battery materials company.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently scope, plan, and execute complex analytical development projects to expand measurement capabilities for R&D and QC.
- Identify and propose solutions that meet business and technical needs, ensuring cross-functional alignment.
- Evaluate, select, procure, and install analytical instrumentation as necessary.
- Establish best practices in sample preparation, instrumental analysis, data analysis, and result reporting.
- Write Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), train team members, and conduct Measurement System Analyses (MSA).
- Prepare validation reports and present technical data to engineering and quality teams.
Requirements
- Degree in Chemistry, Physics, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent with a minimum of 8 years industry experience for a Bachelor’s degree, 5 years for a Master’s degree, or 3 years for a PhD in analytical method development.
- Experience in analytical method development through all phases of maturity, from ideation to implementation and validation.
- Must be well versed in concepts of Precision, Accuracy, Linearity, Robustness, etc.
- Experience with quantitative analysis and statistical tools like ANOVA, Gage R R, SPC, etc.
- Experience with analytical techniques such as laser particle size analysis (LPSA), Raman spectroscopy, BET gas adsorption analysis, density analysis (bulk, tap, envelope, skeletal, true), TGA, ICP, XRF, SEM-EDS, XRD, dynamic image analysis, and gas chromatography.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills able to convey complex information effectively to diverse audiences.
- Self-motivated, resourceful, and independent, able to manage multiple responsibilities with minimal supervision.
- Ability to independently scope, plan, and execute complex analytical development projects involving multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to evaluate, select, procure, and install analytical instrumentation as necessary.
- Ability to establish best practices in sample preparation, instrumental analysis, data analysis, and result reporting.
- Ability to write Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), train team members, and conduct rigorous Measurement System Analyses (MSA).
- Ability to prepare validation reports and present technical data to engineering and quality teams.
- Experience in highly regulated laboratories and production environments such as FDA, AIAG, VDA, ISO 17025 (preferred).
- Experience with proper sampling of powder and granular materials (preferred).
- Physical ability to operate a computer and office equipment, perform precise and repetitive hand movements, wear personal protective equipment including lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, steel toe safety shoes, pass a respirator fit test, and wear respiratory protection.
Benefits & Perks
Compensation/salary range: $151,000 to $191,000
