Job Description

A System Modeling Engineer at Redwood Materials will be responsible for designing, developing, and validating multiphysics models to optimize the performance and cost of energy storage systems, supporting product architecture and deployment decisions in a fast-paced, innovative environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and integrate a multiphysics modeling platform for energy storage systems.
  • Contribute to in-house performance and technoeconomic modeling to evaluate system design options.
  • Conduct architectural studies to optimize cost and performance tradeoffs.
  • Perform component-level sensitivity analyses to inform design decisions.
  • Utilize models to support product architecture and deployment decisions across stakeholders.
  • Parallelize modeling framework to leverage cloud computing resources for faster results.
  • Lead model validation efforts through test planning, execution, and data analysis.
  • Communicate modeling results to influence system architecture and performance improvements.

Requirements

  • An MS or PhD in Mechanical Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or a BS and 2 years of related work experience.
  • Excellent first-principles physics understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, power delivery, energy storage and transformation, and basic thermal mechanics.
  • Experience collaborating in software projects with multiple contributors.
  • Experience with hybrid or electric powertrain model development, PV model development, or data analysis in Python or MATLAB Simulink.
  • Familiarity with basic controls techniques, such as filters, PID controllers, and system identification.
  • Experience with optimization techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear and testable engineering requirements.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Benefits & Perks

Compensation/salary range: $148,000 - $248,000 USD
Full-time position
Work environment includes office and outdoor conditions, with exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, protected by PPE
Occasional work on weekends, nights, or on-call basis
Occasional travel requirements
