Redwood Materials is seeking a Staff High Voltage Electrical Engineer to lead the design, analysis, and integration of high voltage electrical infrastructure for renewable energy and energy storage projects, supporting the company's mission to create a sustainable circular economy for lithium-ion batteries.
Key Responsibilities
Design high voltage AC electrical systems for industrial substations and integrate with transmission and distribution networks
Evaluate and improve existing substation reliability and stability through design reviews and recommendations
Develop technical documentation including single-line diagrams, protection and control systems, and grounding plans
Conduct grid simulation and stability studies using industry-standard software
Interface with utilities and regulatory bodies for interconnection, permitting, and compliance
Perform electrical studies such as short circuit, load flow, and arc flash analyses
Select and evaluate high voltage equipment including switchgear, transformers, and protection relays
Lead high voltage electrical design projects from concept through commissioning
Coordinate with civil and structural teams on substation layout and site development
Support construction, testing, and troubleshooting activities in the field
Review vendor submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings for technical accuracy
Participate in technical bid evaluations and scope gap analysis
Lead research and development efforts on medium voltage DC distribution systems for BESS integration
Mentor junior engineers and develop workflows, templates, and standards for high voltage design
Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Nevada or eligible for reciprocity, with the requirement to obtain PE licensure in Nevada and South Carolina within 2 months of start date
Minimum of 10 years of experience in high voltage electrical design, preferably in EPC environments
Advanced proficiency in transmission-level load flow and stability analysis using PSSE and PSLF
Experience with electromagnetic transient simulations using PSCAD, EMTC, or similar software
Experience in relay settings using SEL AcSELerator or equivalent software
Experience in relay coordination and fault studies using ASPEN OneLiner or similar software
Experience in power system modeling using ETAP, SKM, or similar tools
Proficiency in AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office
Ability to lead the design of high voltage AC electrical systems for industrial substations ranging from 69kV to 345kV, including integration with upstream transmission lines and downstream medium voltage distribution
Ability to review and evaluate existing substation designs to provide recommendations for improving reliability and stability
Capability to develop single-line diagrams, physical layouts, protection and control systems, relay design and coordination, and grounding plans for substations
Experience performing grid simulation and stability studies, including short circuit, load flow, and arc flash studies
Experience in evaluating and selecting high voltage equipment such as switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, reactors, PTs, CTs, and protection relays
Ability to interface with utilities and ISO RTOs to support interconnection studies, permitting, and compliance for renewable and BESS projects
Experience serving as Electrical Engineer of Record for high voltage projects
Ability to lead code compliance reviews according to NEC, IEEE, NESC, NFPA standards and provide technical guidance to internal teams
Experience collaborating with civil and structural engineers on substation layout, foundations, and site development
Experience supporting facilities, construction, and commissioning teams with field engineering, testing, and troubleshooting
Ability to review vendor submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings for technical accuracy
Experience participating in technical bid evaluations and identifying scope gaps
Ability to lead research and development efforts to analyze the feasibility of using medium voltage DC distribution systems for BESS integration
Capability to independently manage high voltage design packages from concept through commissioning
Experience coordinating with internal stakeholders and external consultants to align scope, schedule, and budget
Ability to prepare engineering cost estimates and execution schedules in collaboration with project controls
Experience leading technical reviews and design optimization workshops
Ability to mentor junior engineers and contribute to team development
Experience developing workflows, templates, and standards for high voltage design and simulation
Support strategic initiatives related to grid integration, renewable energy, and energy storage
