Job Description

A Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Electrical Engineer responsible for designing, integrating, and managing utility-scale energy storage projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and supporting grid integration and renewable energy initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead electrical engineering efforts for utility-scale lithium-ion BESS projects from concept to construction.
  • Design AC and DC electrical systems for BESS, including specifying and procuring equipment.
  • Develop technical diagrams, schematics, and protection strategies for electrical systems.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to produce complete project packages and ensure code compliance.
  • Perform power system studies such as short circuit, load flow, and arc flash analysis.
  • Serve as the Electrical Engineer of Record for assigned projects.
  • Support grid integration and energy storage strategies, including feasibility analysis of medium voltage DC systems.
  • Review and ensure electrical design quality through QA/QC processes and mentor junior engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Nevada or eligible for reciprocity, with the requirement to obtain PE licensure in Nevada and South Carolina within 2 months of start date.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in solar, energy storage, or microgrid sectors, with at least 3 years focused on BESS design and deployment.
  • Proven expertise in interconnection and regulatory compliance for BESS systems.
  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) in knowledge of NEC 705, NEC 706, IEEE 1547, UL 9540, and NFPA 855 standards.
  • Advanced proficiency in microgrid and hybrid power systems modeling tools such as HOMER or similar, and power system modeling tools like ETAP, SKM, or similar.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office.
  • Must be able to specify and procure long-lead AC equipment including medium voltage transformers, inverters, DC combiners, energy managers, and battery modules.
  • Ability to develop schematic diagrams, single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, raceway plans, grounding plans, and protection strategies for AC and DC systems.
  • Experience in designing AC and DC electrical systems for BESS, including components such as circuit breakers, contactors, fuses, disconnects, emergency power off (EPO), and metering devices.
  • Ability to perform power system studies for short circuit, load flow, arc flash, and protective device coordination for AC and DC systems.
  • Experience in integrating BESS with grid infrastructure and other renewable and traditional energy sources.
  • Ability to serve as the Electrical Engineer of Record for assigned projects.
  • Knowledge of energy storage use-cases including peak shaving, load shifting, demand response, and frequency response.
  • Strong understanding of electromagnetic transient simulations using PSCAD, EMTP, or similar tools, and SEL relay settings using SEL AcSELerator or equivalent.
  • Experience in designing HVDC systems and converter stations.
  • Ability to perform feasibility analysis of using medium voltage DC distribution systems for integrating BESS with other sources.
  • Ability to coordinate with civil, structural, fire life safety, SCADA telecom, geotechnical, and DC system design teams to produce complete IFC packages and technical specifications.
  • Experience in performing QA/QC reviews of electrical designs and mentoring junior engineers.
  • Ability to prepare engineering cost estimates and project schedules in collaboration with project controls at various design milestones.
  • Experience in leading code reviews and ensuring designs comply with applicable codes and standards such as NEC 705, NEC 706, IEEE 1547, UL 9540, NFPA 855, and local amendments.
  • Ability to support RFIs, submittal reviews, change orders, and site inspections as part of construction support.
  • Ability to manage project workload and ensure timely delivery of engineering documents.
