Job Description
The Director of Construction leads and manages the company's construction operations for renewable energy projects, overseeing project execution, safety, quality, and team development to ensure timely, budget-conscious, and high-quality project delivery in a fast-paced, urban environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement the field execution strategy from pre-construction to project closeout.
- Lead and scale the construction team, including hiring, mentoring, and setting performance objectives.
- Oversee all on-site construction activities, ensuring safety, quality, and adherence to schedule and budget.
- Manage construction budgets, change orders, and financial reporting.
- Coordinate with pre-construction and project development teams to ensure smooth project transitions and constructability.
- Oversee contractor relationships, performance, and logistics management.
- Establish and enforce safety programs and quality control processes across all projects.
- Manage stakeholder relationships, including landowners and regulatory authorities.
- Standardize and improve construction processes, workflows, and project management tools.
- Identify and mitigate construction risks, resolving major issues and roadblocks.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
- A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in construction management, with a significant focus on managing complex electrical or power generation projects.
- At least 5 years of experience in a direct leadership role, with a proven ability to manage, mentor, and develop a high-performing project management team.
- Extensive experience managing active construction sites, with deep knowledge of construction means and methods, coordination, budget management, and quality control.
- Proven ability to drive and manage complex construction schedules, coordinating multiple stakeholders including utilities, Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), equipment vendors, and contractors to meet critical deadlines.
- Demonstrated experience developing and managing relationships with vendors and contractors, with proven expertise in managing construction contracts and rigorously managing the change order process.
- Demonstrable experience in developing and enforcing comprehensive safety programs (EHS) on complex industrial or commercial construction projects.
- Strong financial acumen with experience developing and managing multi-million dollar construction budgets, including forecasting and change order management.
- Proficiency in advanced scheduling software such as Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project, and construction project management platforms such as Procore and Kahua.
- Ability to develop and implement field execution strategies from pre-construction through project closeout, including safety, quality, schedule, and budget management.
- Experience managing relationships with key stakeholders including landowners, utilities, AHJs, equipment manufacturers, and contractors.
- Experience managing construction within dense urban environments, particularly in New York City or similarly complex regulatory environments.
- Ability to oversee and improve project management and field reporting tools, ensuring consistent data capture across all sites.
- Experience managing construction budgets, including approval of change orders, monthly cash flow forecasts, and consolidating GC payment applications.
- Experience managing construction contracts and performance of General Contractors (GCs), including post-award oversight and delivery logistics.
- Experience in developing and enforcing safety programs and ensuring regulatory compliance on industrial or commercial construction projects.
- Experience managing projects under large-scale Master Service Agreements (MSAs) or alternative contracting models in addition to standard GC agreements.
- Established relationships with key BESS equipment manufacturers, electrical contractors, or GCs in the NYC-area energy market (preferred but not mandatory).
