Job Description
ON.energy is setting the standard for large load interconnection.
Key Responsibilities
The Senior Control Panel Designer owns complete electrical drawing packages for our control panels and power products, from concept through released production revision. You will design PLC and I/O hardware, network and wiring documentation, safety circuits and switchgear interfaces in AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN P8, to UL 508A and the NEC.
This is a new product development role, centered on our smart AI UPS and related power products. You will work day to day with controls, power electronics, mechanical, manufacturing and procurement, and help set the drawing standards the team works from.
Carry complete drawing packages from concept through prototype, verification and released production revision, with ECO/ECN discipline
Design PLC and I/O hardware: I/O lists, module and rack selection, I/O allocation, 24 VDC power budgets, fusing and distribution, analog signal conditioning, shielding and grounding
Produce network interface drawings and diagrams: Ethernet and Modbus TCP topology, fiber and copper runs, managed switch port assignments, IP address schedules and panel-to-panel communications
Create wiring detail: terminal block schedules, wire numbering, cable and conduit schedules, interconnect and field wiring diagrams
Design emergency stop and safety circuits with our functional safety reviewers: dual-channel monitored wiring, safety relays, monitored contactors and reset logic
Design switchgear interfaces: breaker close/trip circuits, CT and PT wiring, 125 VDC control power, interposing relays, permissives and interlocks
Determine and document SCCR, select listed and recognized components, and size conductors, overcurrent protection and enclosures to UL 508A and NFPA 70
Generate BOMs from schematics and maintain the component database: part numbers, manufacturer and vendor data, obsolescence tracking and revision history
Set up and maintain symbol libraries, project templates and device tagging schemes so the team works from one shared standard
Requirements
7+ years of control panel design experience, with a track record of carrying complete drawing packages from concept through released production revision
Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN P8, including setting up symbol libraries, project templates and device tagging schemes for a shared team standard
PLC and I/O hardware design: I/O lists, module and rack selection, I/O allocation, 24 VDC power budgeting, fusing and distribution, analog signal conditioning, shielding and grounding
Network interface drawings and diagrams: Ethernet and Modbus TCP topology, fiber and copper runs, managed switch and port assignments, IP address schedules and panel-to-panel communications
Wiring detail: terminal block schedules, wire numbering conventions, cable and conduit schedules, interconnect and field wiring diagrams
BOM generation from schematics and component database upkeep: part numbering, manufacturer and vendor data, obsolescence tracking and revision history that procurement and manufacturing can rely on
Applied NEC (NFPA 70) knowledge for panel, feeder and overcurrent protection decisions, and comfort walking a reviewer through conductor sizing and enclosure choices
Practical UL 508A knowledge: SCCR determination and documentation, listed and recognized component selection, spacing and clearance, wire bending space and field wiring terminal markings
Emergency stop and safety circuit design: dual-channel monitored wiring, safety relay selection, monitored contactors and reset logic, with an understanding of NFPA 79 and ISO 13849 intent
Switchgear interface familiarity: breaker close and trip control circuits, CT and PT wiring, 125 VDC control power, interposing relays, permissives and interlocks
New product development experience, ideally on smart AI UPS or similar power products, from concept through prototype, verification and production release with ECO/ECN discipline
Experience with both AutoCAD Electrical and EPLAN P8, or helping move a drawing standard from one platform to the other
Background in battery energy storage, UPS or power electronics products, including MV interfaces
Time working alongside a UL 508A panel shop or on an NRTL field evaluation, including working through inspector findings
Familiarity with SEL protective relays, managed industrial switches and 125 VDC control power gear
Working awareness of IEC 61439, IEC 60204-1, NFPA 79 and ANSI/IEEE C37 as they relate to panel and switchgear design
Some exposure to PLC programming or commissioning
AAS or BS in electrical engineering or electrical technology, or equivalent hands-on panel design experience
