Job Description
A Senior IP Counsel role focused on managing and strategizing the company's patent and trademark portfolio, working closely with technical teams to identify patentable ideas, draft and file patent applications, and support the company's leadership in intellectual property matters within the autonomous vehicle and robotics sectors.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with teams to harvest, document, and prepare patentable ideas and invention disclosures.
- Draft, review, and file patent and trademark applications, managing the IP portfolio.
- Manage outside counsel for patent prosecution and IP filings.
- Provide legal advice on IP protection in commercial and corporate matters.
- Educate and collaborate with technical teams to turn ideas into patent applications efficiently.
- Support and implement patent strategy to maintain industry leadership in autonomous vehicles and robotics.
Requirements
- A law degree and an engineering degree.
- 7 years of experience as a patent lawyer responsible for end-to-end drafting and filing.
- Experience working at an IP law firm, in-house, or both.
- Experience working across hardware, software, and services-related technologies.
- Experience with trademarks and trade secrets is a plus.
- A registered U.S. patent attorney and ideally a member of the California Bar; admission in other jurisdictions is a plus.
- Ability to draft, file, and review patent and trademark applications, including preparing and timely filing provisional patent applications.
- Experience managing outside patent counsel on preparing, filing, and prosecuting patent applications.
- Experience conducting invention harvesting sessions, invention interviews, and reviewing invention disclosure forms.
- Ability to educate engineers and business teams on IP issues and provide advice on IP terms in commercial and corporate matters.
- Strong technical skills and judgment, with the ability to identify patentable ideas and opportunities for technological breakthroughs.
- Excellent legal instincts, engineering know-how, and business acumen.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, juggling multiple responsibilities including patent drafting, inventor support, and patent strategy.
- Highly organized with the ability to track and execute on all upcoming deadlines related to the patent portfolio.
- Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to produce polished patent applications quickly.
- Self-starter with the ability to drive process improvements and get patents allowed efficiently.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with technical teams, inventors, and leadership to protect intellectual property.
- Strong collaboration skills and the ability to support and educate teams on patent processes.
