Job Description
The Autonomous Vehicle Operator role involves operating and testing self-driving vehicles, collecting data, troubleshooting issues, performing vehicle inspections, and occasionally engaging with the public and company leadership, all while ensuring safety and adherence to operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate autonomous test vehicles in manual and autonomous modes under various traffic conditions while ensuring safety and adherence to driving procedures
- Utilize proprietary software to collect data in real-world scenarios and provide feedback to engineering teams
- Troubleshoot operational issues in real-time and collaborate with dispatch to resolve problems and meet mileage targets
- Perform daily vehicle inspections and basic maintenance tasks such as cleaning and tire inflation
- Interact with the public to educate them about autonomous vehicle technology and behaviors
- Conduct high-profile ridealongs for company leadership and stakeholders, ensuring safety and professionalism
- Monitor onboard safety and navigational systems, maintaining situational awareness and safety protocols
Requirements
- Possession of a current valid Texas driver’s license and having been in possession of a US driver’s license for at least 3 years.
- Ability to reliably work 5 days a week on one of the following shifts: Morning 8:00am-4:30pm CT Tuesday through Saturday, Morning 8:00am-4:30pm CT Sunday through Thursday, Afternoon/Evening 4:00pm-12:30am CT Tuesday through Saturday, Afternoon/Evening 4:00pm-12:30am CT Sunday through Thursday, or Overnight 12:00am-8:30am CT Wednesday through Sunday.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug test.
- Ability to operate a vehicle in manual and autonomous mode for up to 8 hours per day in diverse traffic conditions while adhering to safety and operational driving procedures.
- Ability to perform daily vehicle inspection checks before and after missions and conduct basic vehicle maintenance tasks such as washing vehicles and putting air in tires.
- Ability to troubleshoot operational issues in real time and collaborate with Mission Operations dispatch team to resolve issues and meet mileage collection targets.
- Ability to utilize proprietary ground-breaking software to collect data in real-world situations and provide detailed and accurate feedback to engineers.
- Ability to occasionally interact with members of the public to educate them on autonomous vehicle technologies and behaviors.
- Ability to serve as a company ambassador by safely and confidently conducting high-profile ridealongs for senior leadership, including CEO, President, VPs, stakeholders, investors, and engineers.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to communicate effectively through online collaboration platforms such as Slack and Google Meet.
- Comfortable operating standard field equipment including laptops, tablets, and smartphones for documentation, training, and real-time workflow procedures.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to remain calm and resourceful under pressure to troubleshoot operational issues.
- Strong collaboration and time management skills, with the ability to work independently or in small groups without direct supervision.
- Self-driven, goal-oriented, and adaptable to frequent changes and evolving conditions.
- Proven record of reliability, punctuality, and consistent attendance.
- Physical ability to sit for 3 to 4 hours at a time for up to 8 hours per day in an enclosed vehicle, with the capacity to bend, squat, stretch, and lift up to 25 pounds regularly.
- Physical ability to perform side and up/down head, neck, back, and shoulder movements necessary for safe vehicle operation.
- Physical ability to operate foot pedals and hold and grasp with hands during vehicle operation.
