Job Description
The Autonomous Vehicle Operator role involves operating and testing self-driving vehicles, collecting data, troubleshooting issues, performing basic vehicle maintenance, and occasionally engaging with the public and company leadership to support autonomous vehicle technology development and deployment.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate autonomous test vehicles in manual and autonomous modes under various traffic conditions while ensuring safety and adherence to driving procedures
- Utilize proprietary software to collect data and provide feedback to engineering teams
- Troubleshoot operational issues in real-time and collaborate with dispatch to resolve problems quickly
- Perform daily vehicle inspections and basic maintenance tasks
- Interact with the public to educate about autonomous vehicle technology
- Conduct high-profile ridealongs for company leadership and stakeholders, maintaining professionalism and safety
- Monitor onboard safety and navigational systems, maintaining situational awareness during vehicle operation
Requirements
- Possess a current valid California driver’s license and have been in possession of a US license for at least 3 years.
- Have a clean driving record and be able to pass a criminal background check and drug test.
- Be able to reliably work 5 days a week on one of the following shifts: Morning 6:00am-2:30pm PT (Tuesday to Saturday or Sunday to Thursday), Afternoon/Evening 2:00pm-10:30pm PT (Tuesday to Saturday or Sunday to Thursday), or Overnight 10:00pm-6:30am PT (Wednesday to Sunday).
- Be able to operate a vehicle in manual and autonomous mode for up to 8 hours per day in diverse traffic conditions while adhering to proper safety and operational driving procedures.
- Be able to perform daily vehicle inspection checks before and after missions and conduct basic vehicle maintenance tasks such as washing vehicles and putting air in tires.
- Be able to troubleshoot operational issues in real time and collaborate with the Mission Operations dispatch team to resolve issues quickly and meet mileage collection targets.
- Be able to operate standard field equipment including laptops, tablets, and smartphones for documentation, training, and real-time workflow procedures.
- Exhibit strong problem-solving skills by remaining calm and resourceful under pressure to troubleshoot operational issues.
- Have strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and be able to comfortably communicate through modern online collaboration platforms such as Slack, Google Meet, or similar.
- Be comfortable interacting with members of the public to educate them on autonomous vehicle technologies and behaviors.
- Be able to safely and confidently conduct high-profile ridealongs for senior leadership, including CEO, President, VPs, major stakeholders, investors, and engineers.
- Be able to sit for 3 to 4 hours at a time for up to 8 hours per day in an enclosed vehicle, with the ability to perform bending, squatting, stretching, and lifting up to 25 pounds regularly.
- Have the physical ability to perform side and up/down movement of the head, neck, back, and shoulders necessary to operate a vehicle safely.
- Be able to work in a vehicle that may brake, swerve, slow, or stop abruptly, and operate foot pedals with feet and hold and grasp with hands.
- Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and consistent attendance.
