Job Description
The Autonomous Vehicle Operator role involves operating and testing self-driving vehicles in various traffic conditions, collecting data, troubleshooting operational issues, and ensuring safety protocols, while occasionally engaging with the public and company leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate autonomous test vehicles in manual and autonomous modes under diverse traffic conditions
- Collect and provide detailed feedback on real-world driving data to engineering teams
- Troubleshoot operational issues in real-time and collaborate with dispatch to resolve them
- Perform daily vehicle inspections and basic maintenance tasks
- Educate the public about autonomous vehicle technologies and behaviors
- Conduct high-profile ridealongs for company leadership and stakeholders while ensuring safety and professionalism
- Monitor onboard safety and navigational systems, maintaining situational awareness during vehicle operation
Requirements
- Possession of a current valid Texas driver s license and having been in possession of a US license for at least 3 years
- Ability to reliably work 5 days a week on one of the following shifts: Morning 8:00am-4:30pm CT (Tuesday to Saturday or Sunday to Thursday), Afternoon/Evening 4:00pm-12:30am CT (Tuesday to Saturday or Sunday to Thursday), or Overnight 12:00am-8:30am CT (Wednesday to Sunday)
- Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug test
- Ability to operate standard field equipment including laptops, tablets, and smartphones
- Ability to perform vehicle inspection checks before and after missions
- Ability to perform basic vehicle maintenance tasks such as washing vehicles and putting air in tires
- Ability to operate a vehicle in manual and autonomous mode for up to 8 hours per day in diverse traffic conditions while adhering to safety and operational driving procedures
- Ability to troubleshoot operational issues in real time and collaborate with Mission Operations dispatch team to resolve issues and meet mileage collection targets
- Ability to monitor onboard safety and navigational systems while maintaining constant situational awareness and adherence to safety protocols while driving
- Physical ability to sit for 3 to 4 hours at a time for up to 8 hours per day in an enclosed vehicle, including bending, squatting, stretching, and lifting up to 25 pounds regularly
- Physical ability to perform side and up/down movement of the head, neck, back, and shoulders necessary to operate a vehicle safely
- Physical ability to hold and grasp with hands and use foot pedals frequently when driving
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to communicate effectively through online collaboration platforms such as Slack and Google Meet
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to remain calm and resourceful under pressure to troubleshoot operational issues
- Strong collaboration and time management skills, with the ability to work independently or in small groups without direct supervision
- Self-driven and goal-oriented with the ability to adapt to frequent changes and evolving conditions
- Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and consistent attendance
