Job Description

The Autonomous Vehicle Operator (AVO) is responsible for operating and testing self-driving vehicles, collecting data, troubleshooting issues, performing vehicle inspections, and occasionally engaging with the public and company leadership to support the development and deployment of autonomous driving technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate autonomous test vehicles in manual and autonomous modes under various traffic conditions while ensuring safety and adherence to driving procedures
  • Collect and provide detailed feedback on real-world data using proprietary software to assist in training self-driving technology
  • Troubleshoot operational issues in real-time and collaborate with dispatch to resolve problems quickly
  • Perform daily vehicle inspections and basic maintenance tasks such as cleaning and tire inflation
  • Educate the public about autonomous vehicle technologies and behaviors when interacting with them
  • Conduct high-profile ridealongs for senior leadership, stakeholders, and engineers, ensuring safety and professional communication
  • Monitor onboard safety and navigational systems, maintaining situational awareness and safety protocols during operation

Requirements

  • Possession of a current valid California driver’s license and having been in possession of a US driver’s license for at least 3 years.
  • Ability to reliably work 5 days a week on one of the following shifts: Morning 6:00am-2:30pm PT (Tuesday to Saturday or Sunday to Thursday), Afternoon/Evening 2:00pm-10:30pm PT (Tuesday to Saturday or Sunday to Thursday), or Overnight 10:00pm-6:30am PT (Wednesday to Sunday).
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug test.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle in manual and autonomous mode for up to 8 hours per day in diverse traffic conditions while adhering to safety and operational driving procedures.
  • Ability to perform daily vehicle inspection checks before and after missions and conduct basic vehicle maintenance tasks such as washing vehicles and putting air in tires.
  • Ability to troubleshoot operational issues in real time and collaborate with the Mission Operations dispatch team to resolve issues and meet mileage collection targets.
  • Ability to collect data using proprietary software in real-world situations and provide detailed and accurate feedback to engineers.
  • Ability to occasionally interact with members of the public to educate them on autonomous vehicle technologies and behaviors.
  • Ability to serve as a company ambassador by conducting high-profile ridealongs for senior leadership, stakeholders, investors, and engineers, demonstrating professionalism and safety.
  • Ability to monitor onboard safety and navigational systems while maintaining constant situational awareness and adherence to safety protocols during driving.
  • Physical ability to sit for 3 to 4 hours at a time in an enclosed vehicle for up to 8 hours per day, with the capacity to bend, squat, stretch, and lift up to 25 pounds regularly.
  • Physical ability to perform side and up/down movement of the head, neck, back, and shoulders necessary for safe vehicle operation.
  • Physical ability to operate foot pedals and hold and grasp with hands during vehicle operation.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate comfortably through online collaboration platforms such as Slack and Google Meet.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, remaining calm and resourceful under pressure to troubleshoot operational issues.
  • Strong collaboration and time management skills, with the ability to work independently or in small groups without direct supervision.
  • Self-driven, goal-oriented, and adaptable to frequent changes and evolving conditions.
  • Proven record of reliability, punctuality, and consistent attendance.

Benefits & Perks

Compensation/salary range: $24/hour for Morning and Afternoon/Evening shifts, $25.25/hour for Overnight shift
Work schedule options: Morning (6:00am-2:30pm PT), Afternoon/Evening (2:00pm-10:30pm PT), Overnight (10:00pm-6:30am PT)
