Job Description

The Senior Electrical Engineer at Nexamp will be responsible for reviewing and designing electrical systems for renewable energy projects, providing technical expertise in interconnection, protection, and construction, and supporting project development, commissioning, and operations within the clean energy sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and specify electrical equipment shop drawings for switchgear, transformers, reclosers, and other major electrical components.
  • Perform electrical modeling in ETAP and AmpCalc to coordinate system protection, determine fault-duty ratings, and calculate arc-flash hazards.
  • Manage scope of work for third-party electrical engineers, including protection studies, power flow analysis, and substation design support.
  • Review utility pre-screen reports, System Impact Studies, Interconnection Service Agreements, and participate in utility negotiations.
  • Witness and review test procedures, develop protective settings, and interpret codes for active construction projects.
  • Implement grid-edge technologies such as non-wires alternatives and curtailment strategies.
  • Provide technical support during project commissioning, including testing and certification of medium-voltage equipment and relay systems.
  • Review and approve project designs, including single-line diagrams and site layouts, ensuring compliance with codes and standards.
  • Support project development, permitting, construction, and asset management throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Lead research and implementation of new electrical products and participate in process improvement activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering
  • 6 years of electrical engineering experience
  • 2 years of PV (photovoltaic) experience
  • EIT (Engineer in Training) certification required, PE (Professional Engineer) certification preferred
  • AutoCAD software proficiency
  • ETAP, SKM, or AmpCalc modeling experience
  • Familiarity with AcSELerator and RDB generation
  • Experience with utility scale design and HV (high voltage) substation experience or effective grounding expertise preferred
  • Strong knowledge of industry standard design codes such as National Electric Code (NEC), International Building Code (IBC), International Fire Code (IFC), and other industry standards
  • Strong knowledge of electrical principles, including medium voltage distribution, protection system coordination, and relaying principles
  • Ability to review and specify equipment shop drawings for switchgear, transformers, reclosers, and other major electrical equipment
  • Experience performing advanced electrical modeling in ETAP and AmpCalc to coordinate system protection, determine fault-duty ratings, and calculate arc-flash hazards
  • Experience managing scope of work for 3rd party electrical engineers including studies on protection coordination, power flow, Arc Flash, Step touch Grounding Analysis, PSCAD and PSSE Modeling, and Substation Design Support
  • Ability to review, analyze, and interpret utility pre-screen reports, System Impact Studies, Interconnection Service Agreements, and utility negotiations
  • Experience witnessing test procedures, code interpretation, and protective settings development
  • Experience developing mitigation plans for non-performance to establish safe operation
  • Ability to review RDB files and relay test reports
  • Experience certifying mechanical completion on construction complete projects
  • Ability to provide technical support to development, EPC, and O&M departments throughout the project lifecycle including development, permitting, construction, and asset management phases
  • Experience managing new product research and implementation initiatives
  • Ability to participate in process improvement activities and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Best Practices
  • Valid Driver’s License or ability to obtain one
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate information, ideas, and perspectives with internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience in making process improvements, showcasing initiative, and ownership mentality
  • Ability to ask appropriate questions, analyze data, identify root causes of problems, and present creative solutions
  • Strong ability to build and maintain internal and external relationships with customers and stakeholders
  • Eagerness to develop a fundamental understanding of Nexamp’s operations and apply that knowledge to inform business decisions
