Job Description
The Senior Electrical Engineer at Nexamp will provide technical expertise in the design, review, and commissioning of photovoltaic and energy storage projects, focusing on electrical infrastructure, system protection, and grid integration to support the deployment of clean energy solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and specify electrical equipment shop drawings for switchgear, transformers, reclosers, and other major electrical components.
- Perform electrical modeling in ETAP and AmpCalc to coordinate system protection, determine fault-duty ratings, and calculate arc-flash hazards.
- Manage scope of work for third-party electrical engineers, including protection coordination, power flow studies, and substation design support.
- Review utility pre-screen reports, System Impact Studies, Interconnection Service Agreements, and utility negotiations.
- Witness test procedures, interpret codes, and develop protective settings for electrical equipment.
- Implement grid-edge technologies such as non-wires alternatives and selective curtailment.
- Complete project design reviews, including single-line and site layout diagrams, ensuring compliance with codes and standards.
- Provide technical support during commissioning, including reviewing medium-voltage equipment tests and developing mitigation plans.
- Certify mechanical completion of construction projects and review relay test reports and RDB files.
- Support project development, permitting, construction, and asset management throughout the project lifecycle.
- Participate in research and implementation of new products, process improvements, and standard operating procedures.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering
- 6 years of electrical engineering experience
- 2 years of PV (photovoltaic) experience
- EIT (Engineer in Training) certification required, PE (Professional Engineer) certification preferred
- Proficiency in AutoCAD software
- Experience with ETAP, SKM, or AmpCalc modeling software
- Familiarity with AcSELerator and RDB generation
- Experience with utility-scale design and HV (high voltage) substation experience or effective grounding expertise preferred
- Strong knowledge of industry standard design codes such as National Electric Code (NEC), International Building Code (IBC), International Fire Code (IFC), and other industry standards
- Strong knowledge of electrical principles, including medium voltage distribution, protection system coordination, and relaying principles
- Ability to review and specify equipment shop drawings for switchgear, transformers, reclosers, and other major electrical equipment
- Ability to perform advanced electrical modeling in ETAP and AmpCalc to coordinate system protection, determine fault-duty ratings, and calculate arc-flash hazards
- Experience managing scope of work for 3rd party electrical engineers including studies such as protection coordination, power flow, Arc Flash, Step touch Grounding Analysis, PSCAD and PSSE Modeling, and Substation Design Support
- Ability to review, analyze, and interpret utility pre-screen reports, System Impact Studies, Interconnection Service Agreements, and utility negotiations
- Experience witnessing test procedures, code interpretation, and protective settings development
- Ability to develop mitigation plans for non-performance to establish safe operation
- Experience reviewing RDB files and relay test reports
- Ability to certify mechanical completion on construction complete projects
- Experience providing technical support to development, EPC, and O&M departments throughout the project life cycle including development, permitting, construction, and asset management phases
- Ability to manage new product research and implementation initiatives
- Experience participating in process improvement activities and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Best Practices
- Strong understanding of construction means and methods
- Valid Driver’s License or ability to obtain one
- Excellent communication skills for effectively conveying information, ideas, and perspectives
- Demonstrated initiative to improve current work, processes, products, and services
- Ability to analyze data, ask appropriate questions, identify root causes of problems, and present creative solutions
- Ability to build strong internal and external relationships with customers and stakeholders, instilling trust and loyalty
- Eagerness to develop a fundamental understanding of Nexamp’s operations and apply that knowledge to inform business decisions
