Job Description
The Principal Utility Electrical Engineer at New Leaf Energy leads the technical strategy and design of utility-scale renewable energy projects, collaborating with internal teams and external partners to optimize system performance, ensure regulatory compliance, and support project development from conception to execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead engineering design strategy for utility-scale projects
- Evaluate utility deliverables and guide project development
- Collaborate with internal teams and external industry professionals
- Conduct system analysis to identify optimal project locations
- Ensure design constructability and operational reliability
- Manage technical negotiations with utilities, ISOs, and FERC
- Oversee interconnection study workstreams and validate models
- Lead research and development on grid-forming inverters and hybrid systems
- Provide technical support for plant design and equipment needs
- Develop and maintain technical standards and tools for projects
- Manage third-party engineering firms to meet project deadlines
- Create and execute processes supporting utility-scale project development
- Act as subject matter expert and strategic consultant for utility-scale business
Requirements
- 10 years of power engineering experience, with significant experience in development business
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering required
- Masters or PE (Professional Engineer) license preferred
- Strong ability to perform power system calculations using software programs
- Expert ability in softwares and tools used by the engineering team as well as the capability to instruct others in how to perform analysis calculations
- Experience in substation engineering or ISO RTO background preferred
- Ability to interpret and negotiate technical positions with utilities, ISOs, and FERC
- Ability to lead internal strategic initiatives with minimal direction, including goal-setting, conception, planning, and execution
- Experience managing third-party engineering firms to deliver on deadlines, including scoping, reviewing, and holding them accountable to NLE deadlines
- Ability to create and maintain technical standards and tools for utility scale projects
- Ability to support project finance during project sale negotiations and post-closing deliverables
- Strong organizational and self-starting skills with a genuine drive for success
- Possesses strong project management and operational skills
- Exhibits an advanced understanding of power system and design engineering principles, including inverter design, system grounding, BESS design, and protection
- Strong understanding of interconnection policy and regulatory environment for utility scale projects
