Job Description

The Deputy Director will lead a campaign to develop and promote a green fertilizer industry in California, focusing on coalition building, policy development, industry assessment, and advocacy to support climate justice, local economic development, and sustainable farming practices.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the development and execution of a campaign to promote green fertilizer industry in California.
Build and maintain a coalition of labor, community, farmers, and industry stakeholders aligned with campaign goals.
Assess industry landscape, identify key players and gaps, and engage with industry leaders and partners.
Develop policy platform and advocate for policies to phase out fossil-based fertilizer with government officials and stakeholders.
Research and analyze the economic aspects of green fertilizer, including costs, benefits, and job creation potential.
Coordinate with colleagues and external consultants to understand the cost structure and economic impact of green fertilizer.
Move initial campaign interests into momentum and public support to overcome systemic inertia.

Requirements

At least 10 years of increasing responsibility in the field, with a proven campaigning and coalition-building track record.
Background in policy development, organizing, or leadership within advocacy or movement spaces.
Experience designing policy campaigns and using tools like power mapping, strategy charts, and narrative development.
Strong familiarity with how state and local agencies and venues function.
Demonstrated relationship-building, including with grassroots groups, labor, environmental justice organizations, policymakers, and other key players in California.
Proven track record of delivering policy wins and moving ideas from strategy through implementation.
Strong project management skills and ability to juggle multiple conflicting priorities.
Cultural competency and emotional intelligence, demonstrated by experience leading multicultural teams and building alignment across divergent viewpoints.
Ability to work remotely in California, ideally in agricultural regions of the state, with deep knowledge of the local landscape and strong existing relationships.
Ability to develop and implement a campaign plan, including assessing industry landscape, identifying strengths, current players, and gaps, and engaging key leaders and organizations.
Ability to develop a policy platform and build the case with the Governor’s office and key stakeholders.
Ability to research and understand the cost structure of green fertilizer, including renewable energy generation, ammonia production, and transport, and characterize economic benefits and risks.
Demonstrated leadership and entrepreneurial spirit to build a meaningful new campaign from scratch.
Strong strategic thinking, collaboration, and campaigning skills, with the ability to work across lines of difference and lead with humility and purpose.
