Job Description

This internship involves researching and developing new materials and processes to improve hydrogen generation systems for large-scale industrial applications, focusing on experimental design, data analysis, and system optimization within a clean energy startup.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute experiments to improve system performance and material quality
  • Scale-up or optimize subsystems in fuel activation processes
  • Generate and analyze quality control data for materials and feedstocks
  • Document experimental procedures, observations, and results
  • Present findings to technical teams and collaborate on new experiments
  • Maintain and improve laboratory capabilities and safety protocols
  • Invent and develop new material compositions and chemical systems
  • Identify and address system performance challenges with creative solutions

Requirements

  • Pursuing education in chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, or related fields
  • Experience in one or more of the following: Aluminum metal alloys and metallurgy, Aqueous chemistry and inorganic chemical reactions, Safe handling of acids, bases, and hazardous chemicals, High temperature heat treatments such as annealing and tempering, Experimental design, Statistical data analysis, Apparatus fixture design and assembly, Chemical separation and purification processes, Solid-liquid separation and filtration, Hydrogen handling and safety equipment including fuel cells, Familiarity with software languages such as Python, C++, MATLAB, etc., Sensor integration and data acquisition, Process engineering, Electrodeposition, electrochemistry, and corrosion, Electrochemistry in aqueous, molten salt, and high-temperature environments, Fuel cell or battery chemistry, Fluid and gas handling systems including safety and compliance
  • Ability to operate bench-scale and prototype-scale reactors
  • Ability to generate quality control data of materials and devise improved practices for quality control
  • Ability to document observations in a detailed and careful manner
  • Ability to synthesize data to determine trends, correlations, and underlying mechanisms
  • Ability to present results and conclusions to the materials development and broader technical teams
  • Ability to develop and maintain SOP documentation for experimental procedures and prototype systems
  • Ability to participate in and improve chemical hygiene and safety protocols
  • Ability to invent new material compositions and chemical systems
  • Ability to proactively address challenges in system performance and design and test creative solutions
  • Strong communication and documentation skills
  • Demonstrated strong academic and/or project-based performance
  • Motivation deeply aligned with addressing the climate crisis and its downstream impacts
