Job Description
This internship involves researching and developing new materials and processes to improve hydrogen generation systems for clean energy applications, including experimental design, data analysis, and safety practices, to support scaling up innovative energy technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and execute experiments to improve system performance and material quality
- Scale-up and optimize subsystems of fuel activation processes
- Generate and analyze quality control data for materials and feedstocks
- Document experimental procedures, observations, and results
- Present findings to technical teams and collaborate on new experiment planning
- Maintain and improve laboratory capabilities and safety protocols
- Invent and develop new material compositions and chemical systems
- Identify and troubleshoot system performance challenges with creative solutions
Requirements
- Pursuing education in chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, or related fields
- Experience in one or more of the following: Aluminum metal alloys and metallurgy, Aqueous chemistry and inorganic chemical reactions, Safe handling of acids, bases, and hazardous chemicals, High temperature heat treatments, annealing, tempering, etc., Experimental design, Statistical data analysis, Apparatus fixture design and assembly, Chemical separation and purification processes, Solid-liquid separation and filtration, Hydrogen handling and safety equipment including fuel cells, Sensor integration and data acquisition, Process engineering, Electrodeposition, electrochemistry, and/or corrosion, Electrochemistry in aqueous, molten salt, and/or high temperature environments, Fuel cell or battery chemistry, Fluid and/or gas handling systems including safety and compliance
- Experience with bench-scale and prototype-scale reactors
- Ability to generate quality control data of materials and devise improved practices for quality control
- Ability to test customer-provided and internally developed materials for quality assurance
- Ability to document observations in a detailed and careful manner
- Ability to synthesize data to determine trends, correlations, and underlying mechanisms
- Ability to present results and conclusions to the materials development and broader technical teams
- Ability to propose and collaboratively plan new experiments based on empirical findings
- Ability to develop and maintain SOP documentation for experimental procedures and prototype systems
- Ability to participate in and improve chemical hygiene and safety protocols
- Ability to invent new material compositions and chemical systems
- Ability to anticipate and proactively address challenges in system performance
- Ability to proactively identify challenges, design and test creative solutions
- Exceptional communication and documentation skills
- Strong academic and/or project-based performance record
- Experience with software languages such as Python, C++, MATLAB, etc.
- Experience with sensor integration and data acquisition
- Experience with apparatus fixture design and assembly
- Experience with chemical separation and purification processes
- Experience with solid-liquid separation and filtration
- Experience with hydrogen handling and safety equipment, including fuel cells
- Experience with process engineering
- Experience with electrochemistry, electrodeposition, and corrosion
- Experience with fluid and gas handling systems, including safety and compliance
