Job Description
A technical writer responsible for creating and maintaining user assistance documentation and enablement materials for GIS software products, working closely with subject matter experts and development teams to ensure clear, consistent, and effective content that enhances the user experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and maintain user assistance documentation for GIS software products, including help files, tutorials, blogs, and videos.
- Become a subject matter expert by supporting software development, design documents, and running the software to understand workflows and methodologies.
- Support the entire documentation development cycle to ensure requirements are met for software releases.
- Ensure documentation consistency with Esri style guidelines and collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance user experience.
- Provide feedback and testing support to the product development team regarding software functionality.
- Manage documentation using content management systems with versioning and reuse capabilities.
- Work with software engineers and product teams to design, build, test, and support GIS desktop and enterprise products.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of professional experience in a similar position supporting responsibilities related to technical writing and documentation.
- An understanding of documentation workflows that use HTML, XML DITA, or Markdown.
- Experience producing web-based documentation using a content management system (CMS) that involves versioning and reuse of content.
- Ability to learn and use software as a customer would to produce user assistance (UA) materials based on the experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey complex topics concisely, clearly, and effectively.
- Effective time management and organizational skills to manage priorities and tasks in a fast-paced work environment.
- Experience with ArcGIS software or other geospatial technology.
- Bachelor’s degree in GIS, English, technical writing, or a related field.
