Job Description
A cartographic data visualization specialist responsible for creating engaging maps and interactive geographic experiences using ArcGIS, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and contributing to map design principles to communicate complex spatial stories effectively.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to produce static, animated, and interactive maps for marketing and web platforms.
- Contribute to mapmaking workflows and production systems to enable high-quality cartography at scale.
- Define foundational cartographic principles and develop technical documentation for map design standards.
- Storyboard, design, prototype, and build engaging interactive web experiences showcasing GIS software.
- Conduct usability studies to gather insights and measure success of interactive map experiences.
- Explore and develop innovative techniques to demonstrate the capabilities of ArcGIS and connect with new audiences.
- Stay informed on emerging trends in geographic visualization, mentor others, and promote geographic thinking.
Requirements
- A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in a field relevant to geographic thinking and cartographic production.
- A portfolio that includes recent work demonstrating evidence-driven problem-solving on real-world projects, skills in developing evidence-based insights, and design solutions through a mix of low- and high-fidelity deliverables, with a link to an online portfolio or PDF samples.
- Foundational comprehension and demonstrated experience in geographic information system (GIS) technology.
- Outstanding written, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
- A bachelor's degree in geography, cartography, computer science, data visualization, or related fields such as urban planning, architecture, or information design.
- Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.; visa sponsorship is not available.
- Ability to collaborate with design teammates, strategists, writers, researchers, and business stakeholders to produce static, animated, and interactive maps.
- Experience contributing to mapmaking workflows and production systems that enable high-quality cartography at an enterprise scale.
- Ability to help define foundational cartographic principles behind map design style guides and contribute to building clear, practical technical documentation.
- Experience storyboarding, designing, prototyping, and building engaging interactive web experiences that showcase Esri software in action.
- Ability to work with UX researchers to conduct usability studies and measure success using a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods.
