Job Description

The position involves leading and providing technical expertise in research projects related to environmental science, including atmospheric sciences, chemical and biological analysis, and air quality modeling, while managing specialized laboratories and mentoring junior staff.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and provide technical expertise in the development, design, and execution of research projects related to environmental science and engineering.
  • Design, develop, and optimize solutions for research activities, including measurement methods, source emission characterization, and data collection.
  • Manage and operate specialized laboratories and machine shops, including fabrication, metrology, analytical, and microbiological labs.
  • Lead technical projects, mentor junior team members, and collaborate across teams to drive innovation.
  • Develop and write work plans, quality assurance plans, health and safety plans, and research reports.

Requirements

  • The candidate must have a strong technical background in engineering, science, or related fields relevant to research and development activities.
  • The candidate must have experience in designing, developing, and optimizing solutions for technical research projects.
  • The candidate must have experience leading technical projects and mentoring junior team members.
  • The candidate must have the ability to write work plans, quality assurance project plans, health and safety plans, and reports for work performed.
  • The candidate must have the skills to prioritize, perform, and communicate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • The candidate must have a highly motivated attitude and the ability to collaborate across teams to drive innovation.
  • The candidate must have experience working in and managing specialized laboratories and machine shops, including fabrication machine shops, Metrology laboratories, and microbiological laboratories.
  • The candidate must have experience in research activities related to decontamination, consequence management, measurement methods validation, source emission characterizations, and data collection in atmospheric sciences, physical, chemical, biological, toxicological, and human and ecological exposure development.
  • The candidate must have experience in the evaluation and application of air quality simulation modeling, particularly in facilities such as the Fluid Modeling Facility Meteorological Wind Tunnel.
  • The candidate must have at least 3 years of relevant experience in a scientific or engineering research environment.
  • The candidate must have a relevant educational background, such as a Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, science, or a related technical field.
  • The candidate must be able to perform physical demands associated with working in laboratories and machine shops, including handling equipment and materials safely.
  • The candidate must be willing to work in environments that may include specialized laboratories and fabrication shops, with adherence to health and safety protocols.
  • The candidate must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with team members and stakeholders.
  • The candidate must be eligible to work on projects for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and comply with all applicable regulations.
