Job Description
The Associate Director Transmission leads strategic projects related to electric transmission planning, regulatory processes, and organizational development for utility clients, providing expert guidance and managing cross-functional teams to support clean energy initiatives and infrastructure development.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead strategy engagements for utilities and transmission businesses.
- Structure and own day-to-day client leadership and communication.
- Coordinate internal and external cross-functional teams in transmission planning, engineering, regulatory, finance, and delivery.
- Develop business cases, prioritize portfolios, and track KPIs related to transmission projects.
- Formulate partnership strategies and organizational structures for transmission initiatives.
- Drive strategic project and thought leadership to support business growth.
- Manage and develop the Transmission Practice Area and contribute to the growth of E3’s reputation.
- Provide technical expertise in electric transmission, including ISO RTO planning, interconnection, and capital planning.
Requirements
- Subject matter depth in electric transmission, including ISO RTO transmission planning processes, interconnection and deliverability concepts, corridor right-of-way (ROW) and permitting basics, and capital planning.
- Experience structuring ambiguous problems, choosing appropriate levels of detail to answer questions within a specified time budget, and creating plans to mitigate risks.
- Fluency with management consulting skills such as problem structuring, stakeholder engagement, and guiding teams in problem-solving and result checking.
- Strong analytical dexterity or policy experience related to energy and electricity markets.
- Ability to independently create and actualize work plans that are efficient and provide guidance to clients.
- Experience leading strategy engagements for utilities and their transmission businesses, including owning day-to-day client leadership and coordinating cross-functional teams in transmission planning, engineering, regulatory, finance, and delivery.
- Proven ability to develop business cases, prioritize portfolios, track KPIs, and formulate partnership strategies, organization structure, and governance models.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to navigate client stakeholder dynamics, align senior leaders, and drive decisions in high-stakes settings, demonstrating executive presence.
- Deep technical aptitude and deep subject matter expertise in electric transmission.
- Strong project management and leadership techniques to independently create and execute work plans.
- Ability to work in a hybrid work environment, including working from the office at least 2-3 days per week and conducting meetings virtually or via telephone.
- Willingness and ability to work extended hours in front of a computer screen.
- Occasional travel up to 10% of the time.
- Educational background or experience demonstrating a strong understanding of energy policy, regulation, and market factors relevant to the electricity industry.
