A remote Staff Design Engineer role focused on defining and creating intuitive user experiences for complex cloud networking infrastructure, including visualization, configuration, and observability tools, to enhance usability for developers and operations teams across Canonical's cloud portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
Define and drive the UX strategy for cloud networking products across Canonical's portfolio.
Design intuitive interfaces for complex networking concepts such as VPCs, subnets, routing, and security groups.
Create and evolve scalable design systems and patterns across multiple products and platforms.
Conduct user research with DevOps engineers, network administrators, SREs, and cloud architects to understand workflows and pain points.
Build prototypes and high-fidelity designs using design tools like Figma.
Develop experiences for network troubleshooting, monitoring, and observability.
Design both GUI and terminal-based user experiences for diverse user preferences.
Mentor designers and contribute to the design culture within Canonical.
Lead one of the working groups to enable cross-team design efforts.
Requirements
A complete academic track record from both high school and university, with a Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in User Experience, Design, or STEM, or a compelling narrative about an alternative chosen path.
At least 8 years of experience in product design, UX design, or interaction design, with a strong portfolio of B2B enterprise products.
Solid understanding of cloud computing and networking fundamentals, with experience designing for developers and operations teams and their workflows.
Strong information architecture skills and the ability to organize complex systems into clear, navigable structures.
Experience in user research methodologies and the ability to translate findings into actionable design decisions.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to articulate design rationale to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Self-motivation, organization, and comfort working in a distributed, remote-first environment.
Knowledge and passion for the intersection of user experience, technology, and design.
Commitment to continuous learning and improvement, with a curious, flexible, scientific approach.
Result-oriented mindset with a drive to finish work and celebrate success.
Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events, with trips lasting up to two weeks.
