Job Description

The Substation Electrician I is an entry-level position responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of substation systems and equipment, while undergoing on-the-job training and adhering to safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all work in a safe manner and comply with safety rules and regulations.
  • Assist in the construction, maintenance, and repair of substation systems and equipment.
  • Read and interpret drawings, wiring diagrams, and specifications related to substation work.
  • Install, operate, and maintain substation structures and equipment.
  • Perform work on energized circuits using protective equipment.
  • Install and maintain substation-related metering and relaying systems.
  • Perform switching operations in substations and underground networks.
  • Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order.
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment for proper operating conditions.
  • Assist with the installation and hookup of transformers.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Diploma certificate from High School, GED, or Line school required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have Class A CDL or ability to obtain one.
  • Must have an acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Ability to perform all assigned tasks in a safe and effective manner.
  • Must always wear personnel protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, safety harnesses, ear protection, fire retardant clothing, and respirators when required.
  • Ability to understand and communicate information and work in a team environment.
  • Willing to work in various locations across the state/country and for extended periods, when required.
  • Travel up to 95%.
  • Must have the endurance necessary to perform these duties throughout a standard eight (8) or ten (10) hour day according to the schedule.
  • Perform all work in a safe manner and comply with all applicable safety rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Frequently works with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.
  • Reads and interprets drawings, wiring diagrams, specifications, manufacturer’s instructions, and work orders pertaining to substation, transmission, and distribution circuits construction and maintenance.
  • Capable of performing excavation and shoring.
  • Installs, operates, and maintains substation structures and equipment such as transformers, switchgear, batteries, chargers, network protectors, mobile substations, reactors, capacitors, circuit breakers, and apparatus vital to the continuity of electrical service.
  • Performs work on energized circuits using protective equipment and hot line tools.
  • Installs, tests, and maintains various types of substation-related metering and relaying systems, which include electro-mechanical types and solid-state electronic types where applicable.
  • Installs and assists in the installation, testing, and maintenance of distribution supervisory control equipment (RTUs), telemetering systems, protective relaying, and load control equipment which utilizes solid state devices, electromechanical relays, power line carrier equipment, voice frequency carrier equipment, and microwave equipment where applicable.
  • Performs switching operations in substations and underground networks as applicable, as directed by supervisory personnel or systems control center.
  • Maintains company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order.
  • Inspects vehicles and equipment for proper operating conditions.
  • Understands the proper use and maintenance of hand tools.
  • Capable of assisting with the installation and hook up of a single-phase transformer.
  • Capable of checking voltage on transformers.
  • Capable of receiving and following directions.
  • Heavy Work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle, feel, lift and grab, reach with hands and arms, push and pull, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl, talk, see clearly, and hear.
