Key Responsibilities
The Senior Metrology Technician is a technically experienced contributor who independently performs and oversees the full scope of routine metrological measurements and instrument maintenance across Blue Current’s metrology function, while taking on broader ownership responsibilities that extend beyond task execution. In addition to performing calibration and measurement activities across dimensional, optical, surface, electrochemical, X-ray imaging and analytical chemistry instrumentation, the Senior Metrology Technician leads the calibration program, contributes to the improvement of metrology systems and SOPs, trains and guides junior Metrology Technicians, and serves as the primary technical liaison to external instrument service vendors. Working closely with the Metrology Manager, this role is a key source of institutional knowledge and operational continuity for measurement quality at Blue Current.
Operates and maintains optical and vision-based inspection systems, performing scheduled maintenance including cleaning, alignment checks, and software calibration per manufacturer and internal SOP requirements.
Operates, maintains, and performs first-level troubleshooting on analytical chemistry instrumentation including Karl Fischer titration, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, TGA, DSC, and GPC, following SOPs and manufacturer guidelines.
Contributes to the development and improvement of metrology SOPs and measurement systems, identifying gaps or inefficiencies and proposing updates that improve reliability, traceability, or throughput.
Serves as a point of contact for external instrument service vendors: schedules and coordinates service visits, communicates technical requirements, reviews service reports, and follows up on open corrective actions.
Identifies, documents, and escalates instrument anomalies, measurement deviations, and equipment failures to the Metrology Manager, including a complete technical summary of the observed issue and any initial troubleshooting performed.
Leads the calibration program for the metrology function: maintains the calibration schedule, ensures all instruments have current calibration status, manages calibration records and labels, and reports program status to the Metrology Manager.
Maintains accurate and complete records of all measurement activities, calibration events, maintenance tasks, and vendor interactions.
Supports the safe handling, storage, and disposal of laboratory materials and chemical standards associated with metrology activities, following all applicable safety and EH&S protocols.
Supports a strong safety culture by adhering to and modeling laboratory safety practices and PPE requirements.
Other duties as assigned, consistent with the scope and level of this position.
Requirements
Hands-on experience with multiple instruments from the following: optical profilometry, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, TGA/DSC, GPC, or electrochemical test systems.
Prior experience coordinating third-party service or calibration vendor activities, including managing service schedules and reviewing technical service reports.
Familiarity with battery manufacturing or electrochemical R&D environments and the measurement challenges associated with solid-state or advanced materials.
Experience working in a dry room, in gloveboxes, or other controlled-environment laboratory setting.
Prior experience in a calibration laboratory or formal metrology program, including ownership of or significant contribution to a calibration management system.
Regularly works in an active laboratory and manufacturing environment; standing and walking for a significant portion of the workday (approximately 4-6 hours per day).
Frequent hands-on interaction with precision instruments requiring manual dexterity and sustained visual attention.
Occasional lifting of items up to 30 lbs (e.g., instrument components, material containers).
Regular use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses, gloves, and lab coat; additional PPE may be required depending on materials handled.
Able to pass a respirator fit test and wear a respirator periodically.
Prolonged periods of screen-based work for data entry, documentation, calibration tracking, and communication.
