Job Description
The Staff Systems and Safety Engineer at Aurora is responsible for ensuring the dependability, safety, and scalability of cloud-based infrastructure and applications supporting autonomous freight operations, including safety analysis, requirements development, and system validation to support a fleet of autonomous trucks.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop use cases and concepts of operation supporting safety analysis and feature definition for cloud-based services and applications managing autonomous freight.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate product requirements into technical specifications.
- Define and allocate system requirements across interfaces with proper decomposition and traceability.
- Perform safety analyses such as HARA, P FMEA, and STPA to ensure dependability of cloud-to-truck integrations.
- Design and execute verification and validation plans for scalable cloud services ensuring performance and safety.
- Partner with safety and operations teams to ensure safe and effective use of tooling by dispatchers, specialists, and first responders.
- Analyze field events and cloud service interruptions to identify design improvements and prevent systemic failures.
Requirements
- Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a related field
- Five or more years experience in systems engineering, safety engineering, or a related field
- Experience writing verifiable functional and non-functional requirements, preferably in autonomous systems, dependable distributed systems, or system-of-systems contexts
- Strong foundation in verification and validation methods for safety-critical or mission-critical systems where human-machine interaction is a core component
- Proven ability to work in high-ambiguity environments with evolving priorities, while managing diverse stakeholders across software, product, and operations teams
