Job Description
The Senior Safety Data Scientist at Aurora will develop and analyze safety-related data, models, and metrics to support autonomous vehicle safety strategies, communicate findings to diverse audiences, and ensure compliance with safety standards in the development of self-driving technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deploy safety-related data pipelines, models, tooling, and infrastructure.
- Conduct in-depth safety analysis on operational and simulation data to identify risks.
- Develop safety metrics and validate new measures through hypothesis testing and analysis.
- Audit and validate safety evidence across hardware, software, and operations to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Support root cause analysis of safety issues and recommend data-backed corrective actions.
- Lead the development of safety reports and communicate safety analysis findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Implement safety initiatives aligned with safety goals and best practices.
- Create safety processes and reporting systems to ensure data accuracy and consistency.
- Identify systemic, latent, and emerging risks in fleet operations to improve safety measures.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent technical experience
- At least 5 years of industry experience solving complex problems
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and R
- Experience building and deploying models using Amazon Web Services (AWS) tools, e.g., AWS Bedrock, Redshift
- Experience working with data transformation tools such as DBT
- Knowledge and experience with relational databases, SQL, and data warehouses
- Strong skills for querying, analyzing, and visualizing large datasets
- Expertise in applied statistics, exploratory data analysis, hypothesis testing, and probabilistic modeling
- Experience in machine learning techniques
- Effective written and verbal communication skills to present work and technical analysis to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team
- Design and deployment of safety-related data pipelines, models, tooling, and infrastructure in collaboration with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Execution of in-depth safety analysis on operational and simulation data, and distillation of complex findings into actionable risk mitigation strategies
- Implementation of safety-related initiatives aligned with safety goals and best practices
- Development of safety-related processes and reporting for organizational, operational, and product data to ensure accuracy and consistency
- Support for identification of systemic, latent, and emerging risks in fleet operations, and implementation of risk management measures
- Definition and validation of safety metrics using hypothesis testing and exploratory analysis
- Auditing and validation of technical safety evidence and artifacts across hardware, software, and operations to ensure alignment with safety arguments and regulatory standards
- Conducting root cause analysis for safety issues and supporting data-backed corrective actions
- Leading the development of quantitative safety reports, such as Voluntary Safety Self Assessment and public safety statements, ensuring statistical robustness
- Presenting and communicating technical analysis results effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences

Salary range: $146,000 - $211,500 per year
