Job Description

The role involves leading the development and continuous improvement of Aurora's Safety Management System, ensuring safety culture integration, managing safety risks, and overseeing safety governance for autonomous vehicle operations. The position requires strategic leadership, risk management expertise, and collaboration across various teams to promote safety in self-driving technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and improve Aurora's Safety Management System (SMS) framework to ensure safety risks are effectively managed and aligned with industry standards.
  • Oversee the Safety Review Board (SRB) to monitor enterprise safety risks and support decision-making on safety issues related to autonomous vehicle products.
  • Lead the enterprise-wide safety concern reporting, triaging, and investigation program to foster a safety culture.
  • Define and implement methodologies for identifying, evaluating, mitigating, and monitoring safety risks across organizational, product, and operational levels.
  • Provide strategic oversight of fleet safety programs, ensuring compliance with regulations and safety policies.
  • Lead and mentor safety teams, including Fleet Safety and SMS teams, to ensure high performance and safety culture development.
  • Drive safety thought leadership through internal and external communication on safety performance and cultural maturity.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as Legal, HR, Finance, and Engineering to integrate safety risk mitigation into corporate policies and frameworks.

Requirements

  • Ten (10) years of experience developing and or managing a comprehensive Safety Management System (SMS) within a safety-critical transportation industry such as Automated Driving Systems, Aviation, Rail, Marine, or Automotive.
  • At least five (5) years of experience managing diverse safety teams and leading through other managers to derive results through highly effective teams.
  • Demonstrated mastery of applied, credible methodologies for Safety Risk Management (SRM) at an enterprise level.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Safety Management, or a related technical discipline.
  • Deep understanding of safety-critical systems and relevant standards and best practices such as FMVSS, ISO, ICAO, AVSC.
  • Exceptional ability to synthesize and derive insights from complex data for C-suite executives, business partners, and regulatory bodies.
  • Experience representing an organization in industry forums or helping shape national and international safety standards.

Benefits & Perks

Base salary range of $176,000 - $228,000, determined by role, level, and location

Hybrid work environment with in-office presence at least 3 days per week
