Job Description
The role involves leading field surveying operations, including various types of surveys and construction staking, managing equipment and team members, and ensuring project quality and efficiency in outdoor construction environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct and oversee field survey operations, including houseline, topographic, boundary, ALTA, control, and construction staking surveys.
- Ensure accurate use and maintenance of all field survey instruments and equipment.
- Complete and verify survey data, notes, sketches, and CAD drawings.
- Coordinate with clients, site superintendents, and project staff to ensure project requirements are met.
- Manage and document time and project scope, maintaining accurate records and communication with supervisors.
- Mentor and train survey team members, including instrument persons, interns, engineers, and surveyors.
- Ensure safety and quality standards are maintained during field operations.
- Make independent decisions regarding survey procedures and problem-solving on-site.
Requirements
- Must have a High School Diploma and or Surveying Degree with 5-8 years minimum experience
- Valid driver s license
- Excellent oral and technical written communication skills
- Ability to direct instrument persons and other field surveyors
- Strong sense of urgency and self-initiative to meet client deadlines
- Available to work overtime as needed to complete projects
- Available to work in the field in all weather conditions
- Desire to learn and improve field skills and survey knowledge
- Ability to make independent decisions within the general framework of projects
- Must be fluent in the English language
- Perform work primarily outdoors at construction sites, landfills, and in traffic, in various terrains, climates, and possibly in adverse weather conditions
- Perform moderately strenuous tasks, such as lifting and carrying survey equipment instruments weighing up to 75 pounds over rough terrain
- Climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, clear vegetation, dig holes, and pound stakes with hand tools
- Stand and walk for extended periods
- Use hands to finger, reach with hands and arms, or feel and talk or hear
- Understand and accurately use all field survey instruments, including Trimble Business Center and other required software
- Properly maintain and take care of field equipment and field vehicle
- Complete houseline surveying services, topographic surveys, tree surveys, wetland surveys, boundary surveys, ALTA surveys, control surveys, bench loops, construction staking services, record drawings, and as-constructed surveys accurately
- Check control sheets and block sheets and coordinate information with office surveyors
- Check in with the client on-site upon arrival and departure daily
- Communicate with Survey Project Manager and or Staff Surveyor on a daily basis
- Mentor and train Instrument persons, Survey Interns, Engineers, and Surveyors in field
- Complete commercial building column staking services accurately
- Understand engineering plans and review for potential field problems
- Coordinate multiple field staff on job sites efficiently
- Find ways to improve abilities to use and understand field equipment and software, and improve standard procedures and quality standards
- Demonstrate leadership qualities and mentor other crew chiefs
- Complete construction calculations and block sheets in CAD
