Job Description

This position involves leading field surveying activities, including various types of land surveys and construction staking, while managing equipment, ensuring quality standards, mentoring team members, and coordinating with clients and project managers to complete projects efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct instrument persons and complete houseline, topographic, tree, wetland, boundary, ALTA, control, and construction staking surveys.
  • Maintain and properly care for field survey equipment and vehicles.
  • Accurately record field notes, sketches, and upload/download data files and calibration files.
  • Coordinate with clients, staff, and site superintendents on survey activities and project scope.
  • Mentor and train survey team members, including instrument persons, interns, engineers, and surveyors.
  • Review engineering plans for potential field issues and ensure survey accuracy and quality standards.
  • Perform construction calculations and create CAD drawings for block sheets and record drawings.
  • Make independent decisions within project frameworks and communicate effectively with team and clients.

Requirements

  • Must have a High School Diploma and or Surveying Degree with 5-8 years minimum experience.
  • Valid driver s license is required.
  • Excellent oral and technical written communication skills.
  • Ability to direct instrument persons and other field surveyors.
  • Strong sense of urgency and self-initiative to meet client deadlines.
  • Available to work overtime as needed to complete projects.
  • Available to work in the field in all weather conditions.
  • Desire to learn and improve field skills and survey knowledge.
  • Ability to make independent decisions within the general framework of projects.
  • Fluent in the English language.
  • Perform work primarily outdoors at construction sites, landfills, and in traffic, in various terrains, climates, and possibly in adverse weather conditions.
  • Perform moderately strenuous tasks, such as lifting and carrying survey equipment instruments weighing up to 75 pounds over rough terrain.
  • Climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl to clear vegetation, dig holes, and pound stakes with hand tools.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Use hands to finger, reach with hands and arms, or feel and talk or hear.
  • Complete houseline surveying services, topographic surveys, tree surveys, wetland surveys, boundary surveys, ALTA surveys, control surveys, bench loops, construction staking services, record drawings, and as-constructed surveys accurately.
  • Understand and accurately use all field survey instruments, including Trimble Business Center and other required software.
  • Properly maintain and take care of field equipment and vehicles, including uploading and downloading data and calibration files.
  • Check control sheets and block sheets and coordinate information with office surveyors.
  • Mentor and train Instrument persons, Survey Interns, Engineers, and Surveyors in the field.
  • Complete construction calculations and block sheets in CAD.
  • Understand engineering plans and review for potential field problems.
  • Coordinate multiple field staff on job sites efficiently.
  • Find ways to improve abilities to use and understand field equipment and software, and improve standard procedures and quality standards.
