Job Description
The Fire Safety Advisor BESS is responsible for developing and overseeing safety, health, and environmental programs related to Battery Energy Storage System projects, ensuring regulatory compliance, risk mitigation, and a strong safety culture throughout all project phases.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary safety authority for BESS projects and ensure regulatory compliance
- Develop and oversee safety, health, and environmental programs related to BESS
- Identify and mitigate hazards associated with high-voltage systems, lithium-ion batteries, and fire risks
- Review BESS designs and construction methods for safety and code compliance
- Develop and implement emergency response plans for fire, explosion, and hazardous events
- Coordinate with emergency responders and local fire departments on site-specific response planning
- Oversee site safety plans, conduct safety audits, inspections, and observations during construction
- Ensure compliance with lockout/tagout, energized work permits, confined space, hot work, and fall protection requirements
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions
- Manage safety documentation, reporting, and regulatory inspections
- Deliver BESS-specific safety training and maintain employee and contractor certifications
Requirements
- Experience serving as the primary safety authority for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and related projects, with a focus on safety, health, and environmental (HSE) programs.
- Ability to develop, implement, and oversee all safety, health, and environmental (HSE) programs related to BESS projects, ensuring regulatory compliance and risk mitigation.
- Expertise in BESS-specific hazards, including electrical safety, thermal runaway risk, fire prevention, and emergency response.
- Proven experience reviewing BESS designs, layouts, and construction methodologies for safety and code compliance.
- Ability to develop and implement Emergency Response Plans (ERP) for fire, explosion, and hazardous material events.
- Experience coordinating with local fire departments, client personnel, and emergency responders on site-specific response planning.
- Overseeing site safety plans (SSSP) for all BESS construction projects, including conducting site audits, inspections, and safety observations.
- Ensuring compliance with Lockout Tagout (LOTO), energized work permits, confined space, hot work, and fall protection requirements.
- Leading incident investigations, root cause analysis, and implementing corrective actions.
- Overseeing staffing and training of core site safety professionals to staff all BESS projects.
- Building and managing a team of supporting contractors providing additional safety staffing as needed.
- Managing safety documentation, reporting, and recordkeeping related to BESS safety programs.
- Serving as the primary contact during regulatory inspections or audits related to BESS safety.
- Tracking and reporting safety metrics, KPIs, and trends to executive leadership.
- Delivering BESS-specific safety training programs and ensuring employees and contractors maintain required safety certifications and qualifications.
- Leading toolbox talks, safety stand-downs, and leadership safety engagements related to BESS projects.
- Possession of relevant safety certifications and qualifications for employees and contractors involved in BESS projects.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including conducting site audits and inspections at construction sites.
