Job Description

A Distribution Designer at Atwell supports the design and engineering of overhead and underground electrical distribution facilities, working on projects such as infrastructure upgrades, system improvements, and new customer connections, while collaborating with utilities and private developers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design overhead and underground distribution electrical facilities, including system improvements, pole locations, substation, and service design.
  • Perform detailed design work on overhead lines, underground feeders, and distribution generation projects.
  • Address engineering challenges across diverse projects, ensuring precision and technical accuracy.
  • Collaborate with electric utilities and private developers on project planning and execution.
  • Verify and correct as-built conditions in GIS AUD to ensure accurate field data integration.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD is required.
  • Knowledge of NESC and PENG standards for overhead and underground electrical distribution.
  • Experience working on distribution, transmission, system improvement projects, substation design, service design, and switch replacements.
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience in electrical distribution or related fields is preferred.
  • Familiarity with engineering design software applications such as PLS CADD, PLS POLE, SPIDACalc, Quick Pole, CDEGS, CYMECAP, CYMEDIST, CYMETCC, SAG10 as specified by the purchaser.
  • Ability to apply problem-solving abilities for large utility clients.
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate with Project Managers and Team Leaders regarding workload status.
  • Knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and client requirements.
  • Ability to verify as-built conditions in GIS AUD and correct discrepancies with field data as part of engineering submissions.
  • Understanding of distribution overhead and underground systems, including pole replacement, PCB transformer replacements, line refurbishment, and new construction with wood and composite poles.
  • Experience with distribution generation, grid modernization including smart switches, battery storage, switch replacements, internal line conversions, rebuilds, and voltage conversions.
  • Experience with underground feeder replacement, splicing, vault and kiosk installation, switch gear installation, and overhead to underground transition design.
  • Experience in designing overhead and underground distribution electrical facilities, including system improvement pole locations, substation design, and service design.
  • Physical ability to support work-related field travel as required.
