Job Description
A Distribution Designer at Atwell supports the design and engineering of overhead and underground electrical distribution facilities, working on projects such as system improvements, infrastructure upgrades, and customer connections, while collaborating with utilities and developers to address technical challenges.
Key Responsibilities
- Design overhead and underground distribution electrical facilities, including system improvements, pole locations, substation design, and service design.
- Perform distribution line work such as pole replacement, transformer replacements, line refurbishment, and new construction with wood and composite poles.
- Develop and implement grid modernization projects, including smart switches, battery storage, switch replacements, and voltage conversions.
- Design underground feeders, including splicing, vault and kiosk installation, switch gear setup, and overhead to underground transitions.
- Create new customer connections, subdivision designs, and street lighting upgrades.
- Address engineering challenges across projects of varying sizes and scopes, collaborating with electric utilities and private developers.
- Verify as-built conditions in GIS AUD, correcting discrepancies with field data as part of engineering submissions.
- Utilize engineering software such as AutoCAD, PLS CADD, PLS POLE, and others for distribution design tasks.
- Apply problem-solving skills for large utility clients and communicate workload status effectively to project teams.
Requirements
- Knowledge of NESC and PENG standards for overhead and underground electrical distribution systems.
- Experience working on distribution, transmission, system improvement projects, substation design, service design, and switch replacements.
- 1-2 years of relevant experience in electrical distribution or related fields preferred.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD software.
- Familiarity with engineering design software applications such as PLS CADD, PLS POLE, SPIDACalc, Quick Pole, CDEGS, CYMECAP, CYMEDIST, CYMETCC, SAG10 as specified by the purchaser.
- Ability to apply problem-solving abilities for large utility clients.
- Effective communication skills to coordinate with Project Managers and Team Leaders regarding workload status.
- Strong math and engineering skills, including structural analysis, sag analysis, basic algebra, and geometry.
- Understanding and adherence to the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and client requirements.
- Experience working on distribution, transmission, system improvement projects, substation design, service design, and switch replacements.
- Ability to verify as-built conditions in GIS AUD and correct discrepancies with field data as part of engineering submissions.
- Location flexibility to work in Madison, WI or Green Bay, WI.
